WWC 07 - DC Classics Series 2 & More

August 10, 2007
Our man in the field Cmdr Y brings us these updates from today's Mattel panel at the Wizard World Chicago convention.

DCSH:

Nightwing is being released in the 4th Batman wave later this Fall.

DC Classics:

- 25 figures in five waves with variants and BAF's in 2008 - "Plus some surprises along the way"

Wave 1
- Red Tornado with classic variant
- Penguin with variant that has a penguin (the animal) packed in
- classic batman
- Orion
- Demon
- BAF - Metamorpho
(Click here to see wave 1 images from WWC)

Wave 2
- Firestorm (modern) with a classic variant
- Aquaman (long hair/modern) with a classic variant
- Black Manta
- Harley Quinn
- Superman Red/Blue in 50/50 pack
- Gorilla Grodd BAF
(Click here to see wave 2 images from WWC)

Wave 3
- "watch for a female character." I know that's rather vague, but it seemed like he was talking about Wonder Woman.

- When asked if we'd see Hal Jordan or John Stewart as the Green Lantern for the DC U line, Steve responded with "why not both? There are a lot of Green Lantern Corps characters."

- When asked if there would be box sets for various teams, like the Teen Titans, he responded with "No box sets, but you will see some Teen Titans"

- Vehicles and playsets are in consideration - he asked the audience how we felt about that idea - applause.

- They are looking into an online toy shop presence like Hasbro has, but it would be more in line with the Hot Wheels' "Red Line" club - not sure what that is though.

JLU:

- They are looking at playsets and vehicles - no new product in that line to debute this summer because once they received the master license for DC, the company threw the brakes on EVERYTHING in order to properly gear up to fully exploit the DCU. There may be some hints as to what upcoming JLU figures we could expext to see in the slideshow images shown below.

- There are some JLU 3-packs that sold out in San Diego available at the Mattel booth.

- Mattel is very, very, VERY much into the JLU line, they are committed to releasing new figures with a very strong emphasis on the collector market. The only reason they don't have new figures to show is because of the new directive brought down from landing the DC master lic. as mentioned earlier. "2008 will be a very special year for the Justice League Unlimited line."

Superfriends line:

- Batman, Superman, Flash, Aquaman, John Stewart Green Lantern, and Lex Luthor. Aqua, GL, and Lex will be in far fewer numbers than Bats, Supes, and Flash. "Basically if you see them - BUY them." There will be some vehicles - superman with a ground vehicle, Aquaman with a sub, Batman with "my first batmobile" which seats two figures, and a batwing that shoots discs.

- wave 2 will be Hawkman, Cyborg, and 2 decos of Batman - one blue, one red.

Batman, Dark Knight:

5" and 6" lines - the six inch figures will be sculpted by the four horsemen

wave 2 looks amazing! even the superman is pretty good! aquaman and black manta in the same way, i crapped myself alittle. finally a great affordable harley q. (the hush one was nice but it cost way too much).

Aquaman looks awesome. I can't wait to get the shorter hair version!!! I am also digging the Nightwing repaint since I didn't get the original. I am also loving the classic Batman. That Electric Superman will be perfect for a modern X-men Havok repaint.

My only complaint is on classic Ronnie FS. I would have preferred a more neutral face expression than the constipated look. I doubt they will change it. I wish they would have made Ronnie the regular and Jason the variant. I also just got the SuperPowers DVD featuring Firestorm and I feel like a kid again! I remember why Ronnie Firestorm was my favorite Superfriend growing up!

I am looking foward to this line carring Hal Jordan Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, PowerBoy to go with my Supergirl, Cyborg, Catwoman in the purple/black costume, and Starfire in her modernized classic look.

I admit they all look great...Harley is a must get...articulation wise a great replacement for my Hush Harley, but i love the sculpt on the Hush...all in all DCCU is gonna be a good wake up for all the DC fans that have been patiently waiting for this!

I have now found a replacement for my DCD collection. Red Tornado in the first wave, Aquaman in the 2nd wave....daaaaaamn. And the Build-A-Figures for both waves are fantastic!

what is is the infinite crisis of the dc forms?.. a tni civil war of dcd vs mattel will get old fast just like in the marvel forms....

Anyways! I am with clam on this one!! Hopefully these chases will not be TOO HARD to find other wise I'm not even going to go past the first wave on these... & clam don't forget sups red & blue I tihnk they are chases as well... who wants just one?.. If you want one you want both!!

I am already scared about having big charecter gaps in my collection of these suckers... There comment on the GLs of " why pick" makes me wonder as well if the GLs will not be chases as well! If I could order a case of these and get every chase then I Would be happy but if they are going to do the toybiz rout where if you order say 4 cases one case has all the chases type thing I don't think I will even bother with this line up... Enough is enough!

I am digging wave 2 sooooooooooooooo much more than wave 1!!! I love Aquaman, so I am so happy to have him so early on!! I am not as fond of the Grodd as most of you are though.

i prefer the old DCD Grodds head sculpt, it has more personality in it, so far the DCSH one much like the upcoming Ross one seems more like a Gorilla and less like Grodd then i'd like

DCCU Black Manta

DCDirect

DCCU Modern Firestorm

DCDirect modern Firestorm

Only thing I give DCDirect on Firestorm is the flameheads, the DCCU flameheads look too cartoony IMO, hope they fix this.

DCCU Grodd blows away DCDirect Grodd!

DCDirect Godd

DCCU Harley

Mattel & the 4HM really get the idea of how action figures based on our favorite DCU characters should look. Not artist themed, not out of scale with each other, not limited to 9 POA, vanilla posed, not pre-posed!

Ronnie FS is my only nitpik, they've got to fix the face sculpt & also improve the head flames, they look too cartoony IMO. Modern Firestorm actually has the better face sculpt & looks great, again, minus the cartoony headflame. This is how classic FS should look, face wise. hopefully the 4HM will correct it & the flame heads.

IMO, DCCU Aquaman blows away any of DCDirect's versions cuz while some may have actually looked pretty goos sculpt wise, they were either too tall, not articulated enough or just looked like crap! Judge for yourselves.
