MOTUC Sorceress Figure Review

The new Masters of the Universe Classics Sorceress figure is one figure I have been wanting for sometime. Ever since I first saw it on display last summer at the San Diego Comic Con, I decided to add it to my limited Masters collection.

Ordering the figure on MattyCollector.com surprisingly was fairly hassle-free. None of the dreaded timeout screens I had become accustomed to dealing with in the past when trying to purchase a MOTUC figure from Mattel. The figure arrived in a timely manner, a little over a week from when I ordered it. I usually don’t go into details about buying a figure in my reviews, but in this particular case going through Mattycollector.com is such a necessary part of the process in owning one of these figures I thought it was worth mentioning.

Packaging - The figure like all of Mattel’s MattyCollector lines comes in the standard white box with the MOTUC logo and figure’s name. There is also the word Grayskull at the bottom of the box. I don’t know if this has any significant meaning.

Once you open the white outer box, you can easily pull out the figure which comes on the standard Masters of the Universe Classics cardback with the character’s bio on the back.

Sculpt - The sculpt is fantastic; not terribly surprising since it was done by the Four Horsemen. Very true to her classic appearance in the original Masters of the Universe animated series, the figure has lots of nice details like the molded feathers on the figures headpiece, top of her boots and skirt. The details on the Zoar bird also is quite nice including on the removable battle armor it comes with. This figure in every way has the look and feel of the Sorceress character.

Paint - The paint job is stays very true to the look and feel of the classic Sorceress. The bright oranges stand out nicely on the white and darker blue colors. The same goes for Zoar, and the colors on the bird’s wings are gorgeous.

Articulation - Is pretty basic here and what you would expect from a Masters of the Universe Classics figure. The head movement is a little restricted in the up and down motions due to the hard plastic headpiece, and the way Mattel designed the characters wings are a little cumbersome when you are trying to move the figure’s arms. The idea behind the wings was a good one. Making the wings in 3 individual pieces on each side was good in theory, but I am not sure how well it worked in actual practice. The two problems I have with it are (1) you can only extend the figure’s wings out if you raise the arms up and out and (2) the wings themselves get loose after a little use and don’t stay in place very well, so you’re constantly having to adjust them so it doesn’t look like there is a gap in the figure’s wings. It’s hard to fault the figure too much for this, since I am not really sure there would have been a better way to make the wings and still keep all its mobility.

Zoar’s articulation is also quite nice. Basically, the bird has wings that can be posed in a wide range of flapping motions. This is a pretty simple thing, but for such a small piece which is basically just an accessory it is a nice added detail.

Accessories - The Sorceress comes with an all white magic staff with a bird that has its wings opened at the top of it. Zoar which is basically an accessory itself comes with removable battle-armor that is nicely detailed and a perch for the bird to stand on.

Fun Factor - The Sorceress is a great addition to anyone who loves the Classic Masters of the Universe line. A cool Castle Grayskull playset for her to protect would be the only thing that would make this figure more fun.
