Before he was overcome by the power of the One Ring, the gaunt, piteous creature Gollum was once a simple river-dwelling hobbit named Smeagol. Enslaved by the evil of the Ring, he was driven away by his own people. Smeagol fled deep into the bowels of the Misty Mountains and survived for hundreds of years, sustained by the Ring of Sauron. Alone in his cave, Smeagol's every thought was consumed by the precious trinket until the constant exposure to its dark power thoroughly twisted his mind and body, turning him into the sly murderous monster Gollum.
Seeking to return to its true master, Sauron, the Ring abandoned Gollum, and found its way into the hands of the hobbit Bilbo Baggins and eventually his nephew, Frodo Baggins, who took up the terrible burden of the Ring's destruction. Compelled to recapture his lost precious, Gollum secretly followed Frodo and his companion, Sam, to Mordor but became the travelers' prisoner after they laid a trap for him. Frodo offered Gollum the chance to serve as their guide, his kindly manner appealing to the gentler nature of the overcome Smeagol. Frodo's kindness caused Gollum to waver in his original, murderous resolve, and there began a raging debate in his twisted and troubled mind that would only be resolved in a battle over the One Ring in the fiery heart of volcanic Mt. Doom.
