Video Game Characters Are Taking Over The Toy World
Video Game Figures: Jay Cochran - 2004.10.21
Move over Transfomrers, Marvel Legends and everyone else as it seems this year is the year of the Video Game based toys. We credit Sota Toys with starting this new craze for figures based on video game characters with the launching of their highly articulated 6" Street Fighter figure line. Giving collectors figures that not only look good, but have the articulation to re-create many of your favorite game character's signature moves. As we learned this week at the 2004 New York Fall Toy Show Sota plans to take their Street Fighter line to new heights with a new line of 12' scale Rotocast figures that will have multiple points of articulation and real cloth outfits. Look for the first two figures in this line to be of Ryu and Sagat.

If thats not enough Street Fighter for you then there is also High Dream Corp's upcoming line of 6" Capcom vs. SNK 2 figures and Jazwares line of 6" Street Fighter figures which are actualy toned down versions of Sota's line to be sold at more mainstream retailers like KB Toys. These figures have less detail and articulation but are sold at cheaper prices then the Sota versions.

Street Fighter isn't the only video game license getting the figure treatment. Both Jazzware and Mattel are doing full lines based on the Megaman video game series. Jazzware will also be doing a new line of 6" Mortal Kombat figures based on the new Deceptions video game just recently released for console systems. We are told these figures will have on average 30 points of articulation. Though not locked down the first series of these will include Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Rayden and possibly Sonya.

Sota is also doing a line of figures based on the Blizzard Entertainment game called Warcraft. The folks at Sota tell us we can also expect more stuff from them based on Blizzard properties in the future.

Another Video Game title we leared at the Fall show that we can expect to see a new figure line for is Tekken. This line is to be done by a company called X-Plus who is currently working very closely with the folks at Sota Toys, so we can hope to see some good things from them.

And finally lets not forget the very popular figures done by Joy Ride Studios based on the Halo video game series.

So if your a video game fan who loves toys, then its a very exisiting time to be a collector.
