WWE Awards Master Toy License to Mattel

Wrestling: Jay Cochran - 2008.02.13
World Wrestling Entertainment® (“WWE”), the greatest force in sports entertainment, and Mattel, Inc., the undisputed champion of the toy industry and the world’s leading toy manufacturer, today announced that they have entered into a comprehensive, multi-year licensing agreement, effective as of January 2010, naming Mattel as WWE’s master toy licensee covering all global territories upon the expiration of WWE’s current toy license.

Under the terms of the agreement, Mattel will develop and market products in a wide variety of toy categories such as action figures, accessories and playsets, games and puzzles, activity toys, plush products, vehicles (including R/C), and role play products. The first line of products will be available in 2010.

“The unbeatable combination of Mattel’s product innovation, retail relationships and global distribution along with WWE’s world renowned brand and superstars, global television penetration and live events will result in many years of profitable business for both parties,” said Donna Goldsmith, WWE’s Executive Vice President of Consumer Products.

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with WWE to jointly develop a long-term global brand that brings their superstar talent to kids of all ages in new and innovative formats,” said Tim Kilpin, General Manager/Senior Vice President of Boys/Entertainment, Mattel Brands.

What I would really like to see is Jakks and Mattel both make wrestling figures really close to the same thing. Jakks would more than likely stick to the RA and DA style. I don't think TNA could sell anywhere near the amount of product that WWE did. To save money they would rely heavily o... read more

This was quite shocking news to me. I'm interested to see what Mattel does with the line. Jakks has had it for so long now. It's going to be weird to see a change like this.

Terrific. That means we will get twenty thousand versions of Randy Orton and John Cena and have to check all fifty states for one Rey Mysterio or one Chris Jericho or whoever Mattel short packs.

Im just kind of pissed because I have a collection of like 50 plus DA wrestlers that are still missing quite a few superstars in therms of classics. I'va always thought the RA figures looked like crap, save a few of the head scans. But I do really like the DA. Its annoying how they cut corne... read more

Well, either way, we won't know until 2010. Another whole 2 years away. Jakks, I believe is taking a bigger risk by assuming TNA will still be a popular wrestling line in 2 years.

Actually I see it the other way around - now WWE toys will look a whole lot better than what Jakks had done with them! Seriously Jakks had 4 or 5 body parts, RA thunder thighs, and the only difference was the head scans? And they didn't paint half of their figures on the backs for cost-s... read more
