ThunderCats Mega Scale Classic Lion-O & Snarf Review & Images

Thundercats: Jay Cochran - 2016.06.26
ThunderCats Mega Scale Classic Lion-O & Snarf review by UltimateToyCollector.

By the Eye of Thundera, how did I miss out on Mezco's earlier releases of their Mega Scale Thundercats figures? Well, I'm not sure but what I do know is that I'm officially hooked! Mezco has already released Lion-O, Cheetara, Tygra, Panthro, Mumm-ra, and a special two pack of Mumm-ra that included his mummified version. Being that I was late to the party, I missed out on the original Lion-O, but I'm happy to say that I finally the rereleased special two pack of Lion-O that includes Snarf! Snarf was not previously released so I'm kind of glad I'm just getting Lion-O because otherwise I would have had to buy this version anyway.

Lion-O and Snarf come packaged in a large window box showing off the figures. The package isn't too fancy. It has a classic illustration of Snarf on the front, most of the Thundercats team on the side, and a picture of the actual figures posed on the back of the package. Lion-O and Snarf are secured inside the package with several twisty ties and Lion-O's accessories are secured behind them.

Mezco has done a great job overall on the sculpting on the Mega Scale figures. The facial express seems to be rather generic but the flowing hair looks perfect. The fur detailing works for Lion-O without making him seem too cartoonish. Lion-O comes in at about 14" tall. Lion-O's loyal sidekick, Snarf, comes in at about 5" tall and is in scale with the other Mega Scale ThunderCats.

Lion-O features seven points of articulation and comes with his Claw Shield and two versions of the Sword of Omens, full length and collapsed. Lion-O and Snarf, like the other previously released Mega Scale Thundercats figures, are rotocast, which means they are largely hollow. Mezco has become known for their amazing rotocast figures, ranging from Thundercats to Bugs Bunny to Gigantor to Chucky and Hellboy.

You have a good ball jointed neck with a great range of motion. Rotating ball joint shoulders with cuts around the elbows / forearm area. There's also articulation in the waist which is great for posing. The lower half is in a static pose except for the cuts at the top of the boots which allow for a slight change in positioning of the poses. Lion-O had limited possibility and Snarf has none. Snarf is more or less a statue. In my opinion he actually resembles a child's bath toy. Nonetheless, it works for me and I really like Snarf.

Lion-O's Claw Shield swaps easily. Just pop off one and pop on the other. Both swords fit in the open sculpted right hand. One disappointment is that there's no way to place the collapsed version of the Sword of Omens into the Claw Shield.

The paint application is pretty clean overall. The eyes are well done. I'm really a fan of the face although I think the expression is generic. The colors work perfectly and I feel like the 80's Lion-O is stepping right out the package. I love the musculature detailing and coloring of the fur / skin. I did notice a few slight smudges on the body paint, but these issues are minor. Snarf's overall paint application looks clean and neat too.

I wish I had this type of figure when I was a kid. Lion-O and Snarf are great figures, well worth the price, and will make awesome additions to the Mega Scale Thundercats line up. I'm hoping to see the remaining core characters get released in the near future. I love retro nostalgic figures and I'm putting Lion-O and Snarf very high up there on my childhood throwback list of favorite figures.
