Cloverfield Monster: First Look

General: Tom - 2008.12.21

Packaging: 9/10
The Cloverfield Monster comes in a very large, sturdy box, with a nice skyline depicted on it. However, there is no view of the figure inside, so anyone thinking of keeping him in the box should forget it. Inside there is a cool diorama of the damaged city with plenty of room for the monster to sit in for display.

The main drawback is that the box and diorama are huge. The box will not fit on a bookshelf or something similar; it takes a table top. The packaging is very nice, and I appreciate the effort by Hasbro, but for anyone with a lot of other figures to display or limited space is going to have to display the Cloverfield Monster out of the box in his full gruesome glory.

Appearance: 7/10
The Cloverfield Monster has a new sculpt. The size is impressive and allows for a lot of detailing, such as the patched coloring on the body. There are also a lot of different grooves and texturing on the limbs and feet which make the body seem a little more unnatural because of the whiter color. The two head sculpts are fantastic though and have the most detailing of the figure. For the open mouthed head in particular, the red colors help the head stand out from the rest of the figure and make the figure more dynamic.

Some of the joints unfortunately stand out on the white flesh. The shoulders are particularly ugly, having clear separation from the body. The leg joints are generally hidden well because they’re shorter and in the back of the monster. Overall the look of the monster is extremely well done though, and replicates the size and ferocity well. The included parasites though, could use a little coloring.

Articulation: 8/10
The Cloverfield Monster has many ball joints. In the arms there are the shoulder, two “elbows”, ankle, and toe joints. The two sets of legs also have a similar arrangement of ball joints. The body has one ball torso joint. The head is a peg to allow the head to be changed.

The ball joints in the arms and legs generally get about 90 degrees of motion. The balance is generally good when using all four legs, but balancing him on three legs is very difficult. The hands and feet are not good for gripping anything.

Poseability: 7/10

The monster has a few good poses, but as mentioned earlier it can be difficult to pose him in something other than the standard standing positions.

Final Judgment: 31/40
The Cloverfield Monster is a nice looking figure. He replicates the movie monster faithfully, and looks great on display. He does take up a lot of space, and can be hard to balance in dynamic poses. He’s not for everyone, but the Cloverfield Monster is nonetheless a great collector’s piece.
