TRU Exclusive Transformers MP Acid Storm Review

Although I am a huge fan of the Masterpiece line, I sometimes pass on the repaints due to cost and space restraints. I picked up the original three seeker jets (Starscream, Thundercracker and Skywarp) because they are such major characters in the original Transformers lore but have been hesitant about others such as Sunstorm.

So when Acid Storm was announced, I had mixed feelings about picking it up. He is a character that briefly appeared in the original G1 cartoon (albeit in Cybertron form only), but he wasn’t in the same league as the original three or even Thrust, Dirge and Ramjet. Originally I wasn’t going to get him but decided to when I saw him on sale at Comic Con, maybe it was just the cool look of the neon green.

So now that I’ve picked it up, was it worth it? Read on and find out.

Check out hi-res images for this figure in our GALLERY below.

Packaging - The packaging for this one is pretty basic but eye catching at the same time. It comes packaged in a Decepticon purple box that has the Decepticon logo and the figure’s name embossed in white on the box. There is a cardboard slipcover over the box which has a picture of the actual toy in both robot and jet mode. The back of the box has some Transformers-like designs, the Decepticon logo and Japanese writing embossed in a darker purple color. The slipcover depicts more images of the toy and lists its features. It also says Transformers Masterpiece on it and gives the level of difficulty for the Transformation of the toy which is level 3, the hardest. At the bottom is the 30th Anniversary Transformers logo. This toy is part of Hasbro’s 30 Transformers for 30 years being released in 2013. This one is number 8 of 30 which is listed on the left side of the box. The right side of the box has a brief bio for Acid Storm as well as his power statistics which is reminiscent of the old G1 line.

It says MP-01 at the bottom on the front of the box. I am not really sure why since this isn’t the first MP, it’s not even the first TRU exclusive MP.

Sculpt - This is my first MP that uses the newer Seeker sculpt which I believe was first used with the updated Starscream. The biggest difference seems to be how the tail wings attach to the body and the laser cannons to the wings/arms. The new design is more streamlined and the tailwings are no longer one big piece that goes down the side of the legs like on the original seeker sculpt.

The laser cannons are now attached to a little black piece of plastic via ball-joints at the arms instead of putting the pegs on the gun in the holes on the arms. I am not really sure if this adds a whole lot. In jet mode, it does allow you to use the laser cannons and the missiles at the same time for added fire power.

Paint - The figure sports neon green paint with a very dark charcoal almost black paint on the fists, cannons, feet and leg thrusters. There is also a mixture of greens and blacks on the wings to make an almost digitized camo pattern. There are purple Decepticon symbols on the figure’s shoulders as well as the wings. He also has the name of a pilot, SSGT. Etipsone written under the cockpit.

Obviously neon green isn’t a realistic color to find on a jet fighter plane, but I do really like how it looks on this figure.

Articulation - Like most MP’s, Acid Storm has a good range of motion for a Transformer. He can move his head left, right, and up. The head can’t turn in a full 360 degree turn easily because the head hits the plastic pieces that stick up on its neck. The head can’t look down either. He has hinges in his shoulders that rotate, swivel bicep joints, double hinged elbows, and swivel wrists. For his hands he has the bottom three fingers attached as one piece with the top finger and thumb separate from each other. The fingers can also bend at the knuckle. His legs can move forward, back and outward at the waist. The forward and outward movements are somewhat limited by the plastic on the waist area. He has swivel joints at the thigh and working knees.

Accessories and Features: He has a figure stand that features his name on the base, two sets of detachable missiles for his wings, and two laser cannons. He also comes with a little non-articulated plastic pilot that will sit in the chair in the cockpit which opens. He has working landing gear that opens and closes and little sculpted on missiles featured under his chest plates which open and close. He also has working rudders on the wings and what I think is an air-brake to pull up in jet mode. The nose cone also swings open to reveal what is supposed to be a radar jamming device.

Overall - If you have the previously released MP seeker jets, especially the more recent ones with the newer sculpt, then you pretty much know what you’re getting with this one. Acid Storm is a pretty obscure character in the Transformers lore but as I mentioned before, I really like the paint scheme on him and find him worthy to be added to my Transformers collection
