DCD Shazam! Mary Marvel (variant)

Package Description
MARY – When Billy found his long-lost twin sister, not only did she gain a brother, she gained the powers of a superheroine as well. Once bestowed the title of Captain, sharing it with her brother, MARY changed her costume to one of white and gold in order to distinguish herself from her red-and-gold-attired sibling.

Appearance
Mary Marvel is sculpted after her classic appearances, but done more realistically and with the white modern costume. Mary has a good body shape and proportions, although I would have liked a little more muscle definition in the modern style. The packaging is different from a lot of DC Direct’s offerings, but has a classic feel that goes well with the figure. I do find it a little strange though that her cape looks like it is blowing in the wind, but her hair is straight down. Seems like a minor flaw though, and not a particularly noticeable one since the overall execution of the figure is excellent.

The paint application is good, I don’t see any problems on mine except for the yellow trim on the cape. The silvery white used for the costume is the same as on the cape of the Captain Marvel figure, but has a much greater effect on this figure because it is all over. Mary has a much more majestic, classic feel because of the shine that looks good on display with classic characters. The head sculpt is perfect for this, having an old classic look to it with a perfect paint application on mine. The only thing I would change would be a little lighter skin tone.

None of the joints are obvious except the pin elbows are a little noticeable since almost every other joint is hidden. Stylistically Mary Marvel will go with a lot of DC Direct figures based on height and style. I have a small DC Direct collection, and can say she goes well on display by herself, or with other figures of this series too. Overall, I’m very happy with how this figure turned out and looks on the shelf, and she’s one of the best female sculpts I have.

Articulation
Mary has a T crotch, cuts at the bicep and boot cuffs, and ball jointed shoulders. Articulation is pretty standard for DC Direct. The cape hardly limits arm motion, but the tunic does limit how far the legs can move.

Poseablility
Mary Marvel goes well in a display with other DC Direct figures that have a classic look to them. She doesn’t really have any dynamic poses she can do, although the bicep cuts are much more useful than the articulation on Captain Marvel. She should go well into an established collection, or by herself on the included stand.

Final Judgment: 7
Mary was a pleasant surprise. The white costume helps her stand out in a good way in a collection, and looks great with her brother or by herself. Mary gets the same score as Captain Marvel for an excellent figure.

I don't like Cap, but Mary looks great. I'll stick with my Ross Captain Marvel.
