DC Universe Classics Series 2 Firestorm

Package Description
High school student Ronnie Raymond and physicist Martin Stein found themselves bonded at the atomic level when a terrorist bomb blew up Stein’s lab. Able to rearrange matter at the molecular level, Raymond and Stein’s united alter ego Firestorm battled injustice. While Ronnie was the physical body, Stein provided sage counsel and scientific advice as a disembodied spirit.

Appearance
Firestorm has a unique upper half, and a generic lower half. The upper torso looks like it’s based on the new Black Manta body with some modifications. The straps and symbol are sculpted on, and the shoulder pads are one piece as well. The costume is comic accurate as far as I can tell, and I really like their use of translucent plastic for the flames on the head. I’m also impressed with their solution for the energy coming out of his hands. The plastic pieces can be taken on and off easily, and can also rotate in place. There are not a whole lot of details on the figure besides the sleeves and straps, so this figure relies on the alternating colors, textures, and shapes. For this, the color transitions are very clean and he has a paint wash on the torso and legs. The color choices were also good for the transition to plastic.

Ronnie’s proportions and height are standard for this line, and he fits in well with the other figures in the line. I wish the face had more depth and character to it, because it looks a little generic and bland compared to other figures. The joints are well hidden on this figure, except on the shoulders where there’s a large gap between the shoulder and bicep. Overall I’m happy with the look of the figure. The body made an excellent transition from the comic to plastic, but the face should have been made a little more realistic. It looks to me like the face is a direct transition from how he was drawn, and I think some tweaks could have made it more realistic.

Articulation
The articulation points are standard for this line. For some reason the head does not look up at all, a point that had been improved in series 1. The range of motion in the arms is slightly limited in the arms by the shoulder pads, but the elbows and knees bend a full 90 degrees. The torso can bend back very far, but not forward much. For the most part Firestorm has standard articulation and range of motion; the only problem I have with him is the head being able to look up.

Poseability
The torso and head are the only real problems I’ve had with poseability. The combination makes it hard to do some poses, but I think Firestorm fans will be able to do their most wanted poses. Firestorm had no problems with balance for me, which is a plus. Ronnie looks good with other characters and by himself, but I wasn’t sure who to pose him with except the Justice League. Overall he’ll fit in well into a collection, especially since in a group the awesome translucent flames on his head will help him stand out from the crowd.

Final Judgment: 7
Amongst all the figures from this series, Firestorm just didn’t quite stand out as much as the others. As a figure in general though, he is still an excellent figure in terms of quality of the sculpt, paint, and articulation. On a relative scale of DCUC figures I would rate Firestorm a little lower than others, but in general as an action figure Firestorm is excellent!
