Mattel Puts The Call Out For A JLU Bail-Out (Update)

by Jay Cochran
May 07, 2009
Mattel has put the call out to collectors asking them and their friends to run out to their local Target stores to buy up all the old 2008 JLU stock currently sitting on shelves so that Target will move forward with putting out new 2009 stock. Here's what happened: Mattel, the largest toy comany in the world seems to continually have problems finding a competent overseas factory to make their JLU products. As they explain, in order to keep their shelf space at Target stores safe they had to continue to send out old 2008 stock of their JLU figures while they looked for a new factory to make their 2009 stuff. Now they have a new factory but because the shelves are flooded with old stock, Target stores won't purchase the new stuff. So Mattel's Facebook page is asking you to bail them out by buying this old stock to make way for the new stuff.

What's next, if people won't buy this overstocked product it will then be collectors fault that the line failed????? If you ask me, maybe Mattel should foot the bill and buy the old stock back from Target so that they can then stock the new stuff. It wasn't the collectors' fault that Mattel seemed unable to pick a competent factory to begin with, so why should the collectors be the one to have to pay for the mistake???

Head over to Mattel's Facebook page to see the post from Mattel on this, and let us know what you think about this below in the comments section. Should it be up to you to clear out the old stock so that a store will put out something new?

UPDATE: Mattel has indicated in their message on Facebook that they are funding a month long price reduction on 3 packs. It's unclear if that is supposed to be going on now or at a later time. I have not seen any price reduction at my local store as of this weekend, but let us know if you see any type of price reduction on these at your local Target stores.

UPDATE #2: Mattel has made an updated post to their intial one in regards to the JLU line:

Since their seems to be a lot of chatter online about the JLU sale at Target, I wanted to clarify for everyone. No where in our original post did we ask fans to re-buy JLU figures. We just want to announce that they will be on sale and if you have friends who have not bought wave 1 JLU figures, now is a good time since they are on sale for a month!

We would never ask fans to rebuy figures just to keep a line going. Our goal is to keep open honest communications with our fans and yes, we do need to sell through the current stock before we can ship new figures, but in no way are we expecting the same fans to rebuy. We just hope fans can help spread the word that we are having a promotion right now.

Hope that helps!

We again encourage all our readers to share their thoughts on this below in the comment section.

JLU is one of the best cartoons I've ever watched. It's truly awesome. It's such a shame we didn't get more episodes. Actually, it's more like a travesty than just a shame.

That said, I still can't bring myself to buy those 3-packs hanging at Target. If they were good 3-packs, I'd do it, but two different 3-packs that both have the same Green Lantern figure in them is ridiculous.

Unfortunately Justice League is a victim of it's own quality. It's not like you can just reuse the same shots of your hero web-slinging through the city...oh wait, you can, it just looks like crap. Those shows are really hard to make and the creators like to try different stuff. I'm sure there were other factors as well.

The three packs have moved a little in my area, though the new Wave 3 stock is selling well. That's not the sign they wanted, but it's still a good sign.

actually the show was considered a true sucess, spanning from several adaptations from btas to jlu. the show started as justice league and ended as jlu which made sense because they were able to capitalize on all the characters they could produce which after the show was canceled they are still doing. i would call that sucess.

Thanks for the history lesson that I already knew. What's your point? The creators were getting tired and wanted to do something else plus the fact that it was of such high quality that it cost a lot of money to produce. That's code for Cartoon Network wanted to spend money on different shows.

your welcome. guess i dont have to explain my point if you understand the lesson.

i dont buy into the thought that most people bought them because there were nothing available dc they could of gone dc direct way i think myself included they bought them because they loved the show and they were a good representation of the show and still collect because they completist and do in fact like them

you might just have a point. i know I tried like hell to talk myself in to buying this crap a couple of years ago because i loved the show so much. but in the end i just could'nt do it.

its not easy having PERFECT taste. @smilepunch@

honestly they are the funniest shaped figs i ever saw but if they were shaped any different i wouldnt buy them because they wouldnt be examples of the show. i even collected BTAS figs whenit was on for the same reason only kenner made them. i am a marvel guy but i do have to say that the way bthey connected all the shows including bb it had to be the best animated i have seen.

They just say they ment this or that because it pissed people off. I really just wish mattel would die and another more capable company would take there place

I am so sick of there two faceness and back tracking and we said this but ment this. Holy hell....

Just typed Gleek into eBay search, and sure enough, there's a pre-order auction going on for the a Twins & Gleek...$119.99 + $10 for shipping and handling.

Boy, was I over-reacting. Seems it will be very easy to get at a reasonable price.

I'm not the biggest supporter of scalping but I see why people do it. If collector's are stupid enough to pay those ridiculous prices (and I've done it a few times myself) then there's no reason to stop doing it. This Gleek example may be far fetched but it's only a taste of what's to come as SDCC approaches.

thats what im saying! sad thing is.....a lot of scalpers are collectors too.
