2010 JoeCon - G.I.Joe Collector Club Round Table

Brian Savage & Lanny Lathem hosted a G.I.Joe Collector Round Table at today's G.I.Joe Convention. Below are some highlights of what was talked about along with some images in our Gallery below.

- Collector club wanted Flint prominent on this years 3.75" Convention Figure Box Set because he was the only Joe figure in it. Lanny Lathem the original sketch and then Chris Apple did the final artwork for it. Notice details like the tripwire in the final piece.

- When they go to design a figure they make up 4 photoshop pieces of art work for each figure. They do twice as many when working on Transformer toys.

- Larry Selman did final art work for 12" set.

- The shark used in the 12" set was originally a shark developed for the Sigma 6 line. Like with the 3.75" figures they do Photoshop images when developing the figures.

- The images are sent of to the factories and eventually hard samples made and sent back for approval. When minor changes are needed to me made they take a picture and the make notes on the images and send them back to the factories. This can be a long and tedious process as it can take several times before the factories actually get the figures right. In the future they may start using domestic sculptors they can communicate more easily with.

- The 12" Henchman figure was meant to be a tribute to James bond cannon fodder from the 60's, those guys you always see getting blown up or knocked over rails in those old movies.

- The planet with a sword through it was meant to represent a MARS Corp logo.

- When looking at doing Mantis Squad figures they are still trying to determine if they should be done in O-Ring style or 25th Anniversary style. According to Brian Savage most of the molds for O-Ring figures and ARAH vehicles have been destroyed and so they only have parts to do a few more figures in the O-ring style. That is why O-Ring figures are being done as 2-packs and not larger sets because they don't have enough O-Ring molds left to do box sets.

- These older sculpts have been destroyed because it was no longer cost effective to keep these old molds in storage.

- Cobra Diver Commander and Demolishion Specialist are a 2-pack along with a Manta Squad 2-pack they are CONSIDERING doing as Collector Club exclusives.

- The images shown below of these 2-packs are conceptual and Photoshop mock-ups and could end up as 25th type sculps. It's not been decided which way they want to go with these, O-Ring or 25th Anniversary. They are asking fans here and club member to decide which style of sculpt they should use.

- The next Sea Adventure Team figures are done, but sales on the first ones will determine when or if they release them. Sales will also determine if they do vehicles for them.

- They have been having problems getting stuff shipped here from overseas which has caused releases being delayed. The bad economey caused a lot of shipping companies to cut back on the number of ships they use and now that the economy is improving there are more things that need to be shipped than there are boats to ship them. Savage has had their first set of Adventure Team figures delayed 3 different times getting bumped off the boat to make room for other peoples products.

- Chris apple did the artwork for a window box set that might not have a figure in it for the 12" adventure team line. This set was conceptualized before the last Indiana Jones movie but got delayed cause they thought people would think it was just a copy of Indy stuff.

Q&A

- The Club will not be releasing "coffin boxes," however they might make overalls to put on your own box. The boxes would have been the same size as the ones used on their 40th anniversary figures.

- Due to cost there is no way they could do the same 2-packs as both 25th Anniversary style and O-rings. It has to be one or the other.

- Next year's 3.75" convention figure sets will not be done in O-ring style. China & Hasbro cleaned out a lot of tools because it wasn't economical reasonable to store and refurbish the old tools. From Hasbro's stand point it would just be easier to make sculpts than spend the money to try and refurbish and save the old ones.

- Molds in India are a no go either. Funskool is not willing to work with them and they don't know what the condition of that stuff is anyway, probably not in very good shape.

- The vehicle that was going to be made for the "Moth" figures was going to be the Cobra Hurricane, but the mold was destroyed by the time they were ready to make it.

- The Club has to get special permission from Hasbro and Lucas to use any tools from lines like star wars and Indiana Jones.

- 2011 membership figures have not been decided yet, after Botcon they will make those decisions.

- There are approximately 2500 people in G.I.Joe Collector Club right now. The split between 12" collectors and 3.75" ones is approximately 60/40, 60 being 12" collectors.

- The MCX is about 99% done. The same person who is working on it is also working on the online registration which should be available in time for this years Botcon. Once he is done with that he should be able to finish the MCX which will be in approximately 4-8 weeks, Savage hopes. (I believe they called this MCX, but I am not familiar with it and could have heard the name wrong.)

- The reason they are so slow to get new product content out to their club member is because they have to play by Hasbro's rules and print makes it even slower. Hasbro is very strict when it comes to when they are allowed to announce things in regards to Hasbro products. They are looking for more unique content for their magazine and if you want to write for the magazine let them know. They are especially looking for 12" figure writers.
