Mattel DC Comics Multiverse 6" King Shark Collect-And-Connect Wave Figures Review

Mattel continues their line of 6” DC Multiverse figures with the new King Shark Collect-And-Connect wave which includes a mixture of comic book and TV based characters. Multiverse figures are available for purchase from BigBadToyStore.com.

The packaging for these figures is exactly the same as seen in previous waves. You get the window box containing red and black highlights. The DC Comics Multiverse logo is displayed clearly at the top, and the bottom features artwork or images of the character. The figures are well displayed so you can see exactly what you are getting with your purchase. The side features a brief bio in multiple languages, and the back shows you all the figures in the wave you need to complete the Collect-And-Connect figure. While the packaging is fairly simple, it does stand out nicely on the shelves.

The wave consists of three comic book based figures that includes the Joker from The Dark Knight Returns comic, Burnside Batgirl and Jim Gordon Batman. The other three figures are based on characters from the CW TV series’. We get two figures from the Flash TV series with Earth 2 Flash and Zoom plus Hawkman from DC Legends of Tomorrow.

A seventh figure is slated to be released as a Toys R’ Us exclusive, a figure of Robin that will include an alternate head for the Collect-And-Connect.

Before sharing my thoughts on the individual figures, let me say my favorite thing about this wave is the Collect-And-Connect King Shark. I loved the detail of the figure when I first saw it last summer at San Diego Comic Con, and the final released version does not disappoint. The figure has a nice size, standing just under 9” (9 1/2” if you count the fin on his back). The sculpting detail is really nice, especially with the head sculpt. I love the detailing with the teeth, and he even has a tongue. The paint applications are also very solid with a nice wash effect on the skin.

Articulation is pretty basic with single jointed-elbows and knees and of course no ankle pivot. I do like that the jaw is articulated.

For the individual figures, I will start off with my least favorite in the wave, the Earth 2 Flash. First of all, and this is a SPOILER if you haven’t seen the show. it’s not really the Flash but Zoom in disguise. I would have liked to seen the real Jay Garrick made in figure form over this version. My biggest complaint however comes with the face sculpt. It looks nothing like the actor from the show. That being said, I do like that the helmet is removable from the figure and that they included some running lightning effects which they failed to include with the regular Flash figure. The details on the rest of the figure are pretty solid and look pretty true to how the character appeared in the TV series.

Hawkman is a nice figure if you are a fan of the character. The thing I like the most about this figure is how they designed the wings, which are removable. The wings are made with a light plastic and fit well on the figure. They are also articulated so you can put them in decent poses. The figure also comes with his signature mace weapon which is made with a rubbery material.

Overall, Zoom is a good figure with pretty nice detailing on the figure and looking true to the character’s appearance in the TV show. Like with the Earth 2 Flash, you get a pair of running lightning effects you can attach to the figure’s arms. These are blue instead of yellow. The downside is they also included lightning effects on the figures back which seem to be glued on. You could pull them off if you really wanted to, but they don’t appear removeable.

The Dark Knight Joker figure is probably my favorite of the single-packaged figures in this wave. You get two head sculpts, and both are very nicely detailed. What I really like however is that you can stick a included beatarang in the right eye of the second head sculpt.

This is to recreate one of the scenes from the comic where Batman throws his beatarang at the Joker’s face. This is a feature I really didn’t expect from Mattel. The detail on the rest of the figure is also very nice, and you also get a pistol which the Joker can hold in either hand.

Burnside Batgirl and GCPD Jim Gordon Batman round out the wave, and both are solid figures.

Batgirl comes with a yellow Batring and smartphone for taking selfies. While not as nice as the DC Collectibles version, I do think for the $20 price point this figure will make for an affordable alternative. If you happen to already have the DC Collectibles version, then this figure will fit on the Batgirl motorcycle that was included with that one.

The Jim Gordon Batman figure is pretty basic, but the thing I like the most is the unmasked alternate head. Gordon’s Mech Bat Suit will be the Collect-And-Connect for the next wave of Multiverse figures so if you plan on getting that, this will be a good figure to have in your collection.

Like with the Collect-And-Connect figure, articulation on all these figures are pretty basic. This is the one area I think Mattel really needs to focus on improving. Adding things like double-jointed elbows, knees and ankle-pivot would really elevate these figures to a whole new level.

To sum things up, I think all the figures in this wave are fairly solid, but the thing I like the most is the King Shark Collect-And-Connect. I think Mattel has really stepped up their game with these type of figures recently and this one could be the best one yet.

Look for these figures on shelves now. Thanks to the folks at Mattel for providing these figures to us for review. Check out more images for these figures below in our GALLERY. If you would like to learn more about the backdrops seen in some of the images below, head over to Extreme-Sets.com.
