A week early, and for a good cause, too.

Sony's PSP is going to be in short supply when it launches in Japan December 12, which means it's likely that some Japanese gamers will wind up paying a premium on top of the 20,000-yen asking price. As part of a special promotion, though, Sony's auctioning off 500 PSPs for shipment one week before the official launch date, so a select few can at least let themselves be gouged for a good cause.
The auction, held through Japanese retailer Rakuten, is a charity event, with the proceeds from the sale of 500 PSP Value Packs (including the new handheld hardware and several accompanying accessories) going to victims of the recent earthquakes in Niigata prefecture.
Rgistering a 6.8 on the Richter scale, the October 23 quakes caused severe damage to more than 20,000 homes in the northern region of Japan's main island of Honshu, as well as other buildings and much of the local transportation infrastructure.
Each of the 500 PSPs auctioned off will be engraved with the user's name and shipped out on December 5, one week before the official release date.
