The next gen of discs to replace DVD discs have been shown at this year's CES.

The first one is the Sony-developed "blu-ray" disc, and the second one is called "HD-DVD" and is developed by Toshiba. Blu ray has the higher capacity , while HD-DVD is cheaper to make as we get ready to watch yet another format war coming on the horizon as some movie studios favor one format and others favor the other. Early Blu-Ray players and recorders are now hitting Japan, albeit they're expensive at up to $3000 each. The PS3 will use Blu-ray, while Microsoft's next video game system, tentatively called "Xenon," will use HD-DVD.

Blu-Ray capacity: 25 Gb single-side, 50-Gb dual-layer

HD-DVD capacity: 15 Gb single side, 30 Gb dual-layer

Famitsu has some pictures of early protos for the new DVD players to use these new formats.
