Lmao, robert d, great post!
I'll say this though: back in 1999 or so, mandarin spawn truly was the $*** in the toy collecting world. It originally was a four horsemen sculpt. And, clearly inspired by the seminal Creature Core book & Fewture model kits. A must-have figure at the time.
So yeah, I suppose this is Todd's way of hanging onto past glories, by continuously trying to get people to buy this figure. Paint on this one looks really sharp, have to admit.

Ugh I hate that I like this, Todd and his lame re-paints, but sometimes they interest me, I.E. this one, but I'm not gonna buy it, sorry no.
I already have the normal version, and I look at it once a year, The leg fell off, Todd's figures always have a Leg falling off, Brrrraaa QC mannnn.
Finally. The apex of Todd's penchant for repainting unsold, unpopular stock and trying to pass it off at a higher price point. This is his least sellable figure. Perpetually on sale by every retailer for peanuts. It's practically at "free with purchase" levels. And now after a regular release, a gold label release, and a deluxe release, he's going to release gold label ver.2.
This is his magnum opus. This is his Titanic. His Spruce Goose. Be in awe of this man's hubris, for he is Prometheus. Well, a modern Prometheus. No, wait, that was Frankenstein's Monster. Though one could hardly call a novel from the 1800s modern, but regardless. He is a modern, modern Prometheus. Stare not directly at his brilliance, for it is like looking at the sun. And like noble Alexander, I fear there are no more worlds left for him to conquer, so he shall surely weep.
Paint job does look kinda cool, tho.
