I like that Supergirl. Even though I dont collect DC, I did enjoy that comic book series and would have liked to get her. But if youre not really dialed into McFarlanes goings on, it seems impossible to get those kind of figures. Because of my physical restrictions Im also only able to buy online.
So, stuff like that cant make DC happy. Im sure they want to sell as many figures as possible. Just my outside view.
Finances probably were a big reason, too, for sure. But maybe DC was also impressed with what Mattel has been doing with MOTU since they lost the license.
I wonder if some of losing the rights are tied to covid. He produced a ton of figures. Then the economy shuts down and things go to clearance. Then he makes fewer figures and they can be hard to find. So he not making others as much money and they go elsewhere, all as an unanticipated result of the virus. Sorry, my sociology/intersectionality brain kicked in reading Jay's response.

Maybe Todd is like, whatever, it doesn't matter now. Gold, Platinum, Red maybe he's doing these because it's a relatively small company and he wasn't able to produce enough in time. Maybe that's one reason he lost the rights (just a guess).
He lost the rights because he and Spin Master were almost certainly outbid. Mattel was livid and shocked they lost the rights the last time. My guess is that Mattel simply upped their offer and Warner couldn't refuse (and you're probably on to something that they preferred to work with a bigger company).
He didn't lose the rights because he can't produce enough toys. Remember, in his first years, he produced a ton of figures. So many that they went to clearance. Then he had to cut production, which is why McFarlane's most desirable stuff is now a lot harder to get.
I'm very curious to hear all the details someday. These types of things seem to take forever to leak out, though.

One reason I'm not sad to see Todd not have the DC license: a 4-figure wave and half of them are "chase only". No regular version/release. Doesn't bother me as much if it's a one-off version of a character otherwise available, but we have two previously unreleased characters here. Even in larger cities, retail toy hunting isn't what it used to be. But especially in smaller cities/towns, there are fewer stores carrying less merchandise, etc., which means some waves never even see a shelf or peg, depending on where a person lives. Like looking for unicorns in the kitchen cabinets. Level of effort doesn't matter if something isn't there to be found in the first place.
It bugs me just a bit that Supergirl only comes with one flat hand, but I still plan on getting the figure regardless, same with Kingdom Come Superman, though I wish they'd gone a better job on his hair. No interest in the other two

Helen Slater Supergirl is underrated, but the legs are terrible. I am wondering if I can take the legs off this one and use them on the previous version.

Yeah. He probably only made like 6 of her though.
I wonder when these go up for preorder.
