I don't know if Frazetta has ever given some background or history to his artworks, but it always seemed to me that the Death Dealer was human in nature although a prolific warrior, a imposing presence and a grim vibe, but human after all.

With the glowing red eyes and sometimes gray skin, there was always something very supernatural about this character to me, and I think that comes through a little more in the Mezco figure than the TB League one. I just wish the One:12 figure had chainmail on the arms since it seems very much based on the Death Dealer III painting.
