Hasbro Says It's Not Selling Dungeons And Dragons

A story this week has started gaining traction which originated from a Chinese website speed-daily which stated that due to recent financial problems, Hasbro was considering the idea of selling it's Dungeons And Dragons property to the company Tencent which is a Chinese video game company that also owns the social media platform WeChat. Specifically it said that Tencent had entered into early negotiations with Hasbro to purchase a number of D&D rights including adaptation rights for video games.

Because the story was gaining so much traction, Hasbro's gaming division Wizards of the Coast felt compelled to release the following statement:

We regularly talk to Tencent and enjoy multiple partnerships with them across a number of our IP's. We don't make a habit of commenting on internet rumors, but to be clear: we are not looking to sell our D&D IP. We will keep talking to partners about how we bring the best digital experience to our fans. We won't comment any further on speculation or rumors about potential M&A or licensing deals.

Hasbro's recent trend has been to license out IP's that they own to other companies, so my guess is this recent rumor stemmed from some kind of discussion over that. Being Hasbro's Wizard's of the Coast brands which includes Dungeons & Dragons have been one of the few strong financial performers for the company in recent times, they probably felt the need to comment on this particular rumor to prevent their stocks from dropping anymore than they already have in recent days.

Edit: Didnt fully read your post, you mention this already I'm sorry. Wizards of the Coast (Who produces D&D, but is under the Hasbro Umbrella) has since released a statement saying that it has no interest in selling off its D&D IP in any way, shape, or form. Given, WotC is a subsidiary of Hasbro now, they're given alot of autonomy in running their company and in the D&D line. Hasbro may very well license D&D out to other toymakers (as they just recently did with McFarlane and another company which I forget), but as for them getting rid of D&D to Tencent, that seems to now to be just a rumor. Hasbro and Tencent do work closely together on multiple projects, and it's possible that they would give them more access to the D&D Line, but with Wotc making that statement I tend to believe it. D&D is a massive franchise that is directly responsible for the rpg category (pen and paper and Video Game-wise, and indirectly responsible for probably the majority of video games out now. I don't see Hasbro selling that off, I'm sorry. Especially after Wotc made that official statement.

I will not give more than $10 for a Dungeon and Dragons movie video game but for one based on the 80s animated series I will pay $50+ for it...???

there are 2 MMO video games featuring Dungeons & Dragons that are free to play

and Baldur's Gate 3 is pretty fun to playI do wish they would give someone a license to make 1/18th scale or 4 inch figures ones with articulation similar to Hiya's figuresnot 5 POA

I was wondering about this rumor, Hasbro has been actively licensing their IPs so the fact that they've licensed D@D isn't real news but the selling part would be. Nice to know that is not the case. For now.

Okay fine, but then Hasbro, can you give us more Game Figures for Golden Archives, it's too limited, don't you know how many people want more Game figures, you did good on a few but we need a solid line, more stuff, I'm ready!
