It's Wednesday and you know what that means: ToyFarce review!
This week, we're having a look at the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle: Mutant Mayhem - Knock Off Knockout 2-packs from Playmates Toys, which include our favorite turtles with their bootleg versions, the Tubular Tortoise Karate Warriors, from the 2025 short movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Chrome Alone 2 - Lost in New Jersey (which played in theaters before the latest Spongebob Squarepants movie). I had posted an article about Playmates Toys "out-farcing" me by releasing those, and I had to get them. They're the best legit bootleg figures around!
The 4 sets come with one of the TMNT in winter outfit, from when they were shopping for christmas presents in the city, along with their bootleg counterparts, which all have hilarious names: Nardo, Ralph, Danny and Mark. The packaging has the turtle displayed next to the knockoff version, complete with packaging. Playmates Toys went the extra mile with those, adding the card to those knockoff figures.
The TMNT figures are pretty decent, it's nice to get a winter version of them, with warm clothes. Leonardo and Raphael come with a shopping bag, Mikey has the mug that he made for Splinter and Donatello has... a puffy jacket? No accessories for Donnie, but he has a removable fanny pack, which is something I guess. You can recreate the scene from the short film with those, as they are browsing the stores before seeing the commercial for their bootleg versions.
The Tubular Tortoise Karate Warriors are one of those that are so bad that they're good. In fact, they're hilarious. Nardo, Ralph, Danny and Mark come with an alternative version of the original weapons. They have very derpy facial expressions. They do not feel like bootleg toys, in the sense that they have some weight to them, and feel like quality plastic, while bootleg toys would have felt very light or hollow and would break down in pieces when handling them. They captured the look perfectly. They all have a "Karate Punch Action", where the waist rotates back in place when you turn it (like old Hasbro WWF wrestler figures). I loved the synergy where the trailer was released and Playmates Toys immediately announced them after, with the same outfits and bootleg figures. I wish we had more of that!
As we're winding down on the last year of TMNT for Playmates Toys, this is a very fun set, and I hope we see a few more of those before the line goes to Mattel. I'm also excited to see what Mattel will have in store.
More news at 11:00... Watch out, baddies! Here comes the Radical Reptiles!
I actually like the TTKW better than the reboot designs, if for no other reason than the very funny parody and brand self-awareness going on here.
I thought it was MOTU that pioneered the whole the spring-loaded waist punches back in the day, hence the 80s barbarian muscles look? At any rate, great review and photo essay TF!
This is funny in a very good way. Thank you for this very detailed review and the pics really justify the feels that the KOs are pretty awesome, and to include the originals is a very nice touch. Playmates is scoring week after week in their last year with the IP.
