Playmates Toys Dungeon Crawler Carl Princess Donut The Queen Anne Chonk + Carl Action Figure Review and Images

NEW ACHIEVEMENT! This week, we're having a look at the first action figure from Dungeon Crawler Carl, the Princess Donut the Queen Anne Chonk + Carl figure set by the Borant Company (aka Playmates Toys). This set was available at SDCC as a 'first-to-market' and will be available everywhere later. Playmates Toys is going all in on Dungeon Crawler Carl and I'm here for it. I also love that this set is sold as a Princess Donut action figure with bonus Carl accessory. "Goddammit, Donut!"

Dungeon Crawler Carl is a fantastic Lit-RPG book series by Matt Dinniman, that tells the story of Carl and his ex-girlfriend's cat Princess Donut who more or less survive the apocalypse and are transported in a world where people go through levels in a dungeon to survive, the whole thing being televised for the entertaiment of alien species. Think H2G2 meets The Running Man/Hunger Games with a dark sense of humor. There are 8 books in the series, along with audio books which are splendidly narrated by Jeff Hays, who does the voices of all characters, sometimes in hilarious ways. I recommend the audio books as much as the books, the audio visual landscape is amazing (and Jeff Hays did such a good job that he will remain the official voice of Princess Donut in future projects). There is a TV series in the works, produced by Seth MacFarlane (The Orville, Family Guy, American Dad...) and I have a feeling that it is just about to be the next big pop culture thing. I saw multiple cosplayers dressed as Carl already at SDCC this year, and I truly think the TV series will bring a lot more eyes on it, and that within a couple of years, everybody will know of Carl, and Princess Donut will be on everything, as the new Baby Groot/Grogu kind of mascot. There is also a roleplaying game, which was funded recently on Kickstarter.



Playmates Toys, under the name 'Borant Company' (the evil company in the books, very meta), got the license for it and has already announced a ton of merch, such as action figures, Princess Donut blind boxes, trading cards, statues, plushes... The action figures are sculpted by the legendary Phil Ramirez, who I had the pleasure to meet. While discussing the randomness of Playmates Toys picking a rather violent, adult book series for toys, we did realize that Playmates had already done that once a while ago, with a rather violent, adult comic book series, about 4 turtles who know martial arts... The rest is history.



The set of Princess Donut the Queen Anne Chonk and Carl comes with 2 heads for Carl, 2 pairs of hands, one Enchanted Nightgaunt Cloak of Stoutness (cloak), one Enchanted War Gauntlet of the Exalted Grull, the Prism Industries Capacitating and Focusing Goggles for Princess Donut (basically, lazer glasses), 3 blood effects (one for Carl's fist and 2 for his back), and one translucent green oozy effect to stick under Carl's foot (that may or may not be goblin guts). If you're wondering why Carl is in his boxer shorts (the Enchanted BigBoi Boxers) and barefeet, it's because all his buffs and bonuses would be removed if he wore anything else.














Princess Donut has a magnet and can be attached on Carl's shoulder with the cloak, or as the packaging says, there is "a built-in shoulder throne (Carl) for the grand champion". The blood effects and goblin guts effect for the foot are fun accessories. I don't remember ever having an effect accessory that attaches under the foot, as a 'you stepped in something' effect, it was always either skis or something practical. The figure has decent articulations, especially on the legs. I would add a bicep swivel to really make it great. The screaming head of Carl has a slightly cross eyed paint job on the eyes on mine, but I'll survive. If you love the books, you'll have to get that figure.










The first wave of action figures will also have Mordecai (with alcohol bottles and vomit effect) and Prepotente (hopefully with scream effect). The second wave was just announced at SDCC to have Bautista and Imani. The first wave of Dungeon Crawler Carl figures should hit stores around september.
