HBO Max and Cartoon Network have greenlit a straight to series order for Batman: Caped Crusader, an all-new animated series and reimagining of the Batman mythology through the visionary lens of executive producers Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves and produced by Warner Bros. Animation (WBA), Bad Robot Productions and 6th & Idaho. The news was announced today by Tom Ascheim, President, Warner Bros. Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics (GKYAC) and Sam Register, President, Warner Bros. Animation (WBA) and Cartoon Network Studios (CNS).

Tom Ascheim said: “It is always fun to feed the insatiable appetite fans have for all things Batman. Batman: Caped Crusader will entertain first time and die-hard fans alike and, with such an impressive creative team in place, we know we have another future Batman classic in the making.”

Batman: Caped Crusader represents Timm’s return to the iconic DC character in animated episodic television, which began with the Emmy Award-winning Batman: The Animated Series.

Praised by many to be the gold standard of animated superhero storytelling, Batman: The Animated Series is considered one of the best depictions of the Dark Knight in any medium.

Now, nearly 30 years since the series premiered, Timm once again takes on the mantle of the Bat alongside two of the most acclaimed filmmakers in the industry: J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves. Utilizing state-of-the-art animation techniques and technologies available, this powerful creative partnership will once again reinvent Batman and his iconic rogue’s gallery with sophisticated storytelling, nuanced characters and intense action sequences all set in a visually striking world.

Sam Register said: “Batman: The Animated Series was a masterpiece that shaped the perception of the character for an entire generation of fans. It is in that spirit that we are bringing together three master storytellers in J.J., Matt and Bruce – each with their own intuitive understanding and affection for the character – to create a new series that will continue in the same groundbreaking legacy.”

Executive Producers Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves said: “We are beyond excited to be working together to bring this character back, to tell engrossing new stories in Gotham City. The series will be thrilling, cinematic and evocative of Batman’s noir roots, while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters. We cannot wait to share this new world.”

The news of this Batman animated show came before the released of The Batman by Matt Reeves, after that film was critically acclaimed surely some streaming service should pick up this project knowing Revves is involved.

I don't expect to ever see this in the light of day. It is highly doubtful that Netflix, Apple TV+, or Prime pick this show up. Warner Brothers Discovery is going to squander all good will with the DC fanbase. Very short sighted decision making by WBD.

According to THR:"Caped Crusader is already receiving intense interest from Apple, Hulu and Netflix, among others, our sources tell us. Incoming calls are always a good thing in this business."And why wouldn't they be intensely interested? A new Batman cartoon from Bruce Timm, as well as Matt Reeves, JJ Abrams (regardless of whether he's a good filmmaker or not, his movies and tv shows have pretty much all been hits), and Ed Brubaker - this is a cartoon with a proven pedigree. Netflix has done well with WB's live action DC strays Lucifer and Sandman and even the first two seasons of Young Justice after it was cancelled at Cartoon Network. The only way a streamer doesn't pick this up is if Zaslav doesn't let them. He'd be stupid not to, but apparently all of his cost-saving BS left the studio so broke, they can only afford to release two more movies (DC or otherwise) for the rest of the year, so stupid doesn't seem exactly beyond him, but it would be a big surprise for Caped Crusader to go nowhere.

I was really looking forward to another different approach, but it looks like we won't see much of the non-canon stuff lately.

Keep JJ Abrams away from Batman at any cost.

Well this sucks! How long has it been since we've had a solo Batman series? 10 years? How is Warner going to grow the DC brand? I got into reading DC comics because of all the great cartoons on TV. Maybe their worried about the copyright ending in a decade or so?

Back in May it was reported that HBO Max and Cartoon Network had greenlit a straight to series order for Batman: Caped Crusader, an all-new animated series and reimagining of the Batman mythology through the visionary lens of executive producers Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves and produced by Warner Bros. Animation (WBA), Bad Robot Productions and 6th & Idaho.Well now according to Variety that is no longer happening. This is just the latest casualty in the recent Warner Bros./Discovery merger.

According to Variety they will attempt to shop this series elsewhere to see if any other networks are willing to pick it up.

JJ Abrams is a "master storyteller" the same way William Shatner is a master singer.

I remember a bit ago, there was some scuttlebutt abounding 'round a possible continuation or revival of the 90's Batman the Animated Series.I'm certain this was what the talk was about, considering the Bruce Timm involvement. While I would have loved a proper return to that series, I see why Timm would want to try something a bit different.
