It's a complete caricature. It's a live-action cartoon whose main actors are completely self-aware that none of them have gone on to do anything greater than starring in "Karate Kid" movies from the 1980s.

That said, it introduces their kids and deals with how life moves on even though these characters very clearly didn't... They're trying to relive their glory days through teaching karate (almost like an Al Bundy sort of way) while the kids and their spouses all prove to be faaar more mature than any of them.

It's basically "Karate Kid meets Saved by the Bell"... A cartoon that gets crazier as the story goes on because it absolutely shouldn't be as good as it is. It seems like the show runners are just as surprised by the audience's love for the show because they clearly didn't have a vision for the story... They're very obviously making it up as they go.

Ending on 6 seasons is just about right. They should probably consider making season 6 shorter, like a half-season, because it's obvious during season 5 they really had no idea where else to go with character development.

It really it is great trash television; a true guilty pleasure. ... Highly recommended but keep expectations low!

I haven't ever watched any of this show. What's the draw? I mean I enjoyed the Karate Kid movies when I was a kid, but I just can't imagine this being all that interesting - especially to last six seasons? Anyone who has watched want to offer why it has been so successful?

First season kind of played off that internet bit about Johnny being the real hero of the first movie and Daniel being the villain. Johnny is basically a down on his luck loser and things take off from there. Their kids get involved in the rivalry, characters from the movies return, etc. It was entertaining...ridiculous at times (last ep. of season 2 lol) and very soap opera-like imo.

Having said that, only watched the first 3 seasons (first season was actually a youtube red exclusive) enjoyed them but felt like I had my fill after that and moved on. Surprised it lasted so long...

Mainly in the nut shell...

Cobra Kai takes place over 30 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament with the continuation of the inescapable conflict between Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka). It deals with their kids fighting each other and has appearances from characters from the movies.

Think this is the final season because they have run out of characters from all the movies...

Seriously, this show has no business being as amazing as it has been.
