Alfred Pennyworth is out of a job...

HBO Max has decided against a fourth season of Pennyworth after the third season on the streaming service. HBO Max picked up the series after two seasons on Epix. The third season ran its 10-episode from October through the end of November.

The series follows Alfred Pennyworth (Jack Bannon), a former British SAS soldier, who forms a security company in 1960s London and goes to work with young billionaire Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge), before he becomes Bruce Wayne’s father. The third season begins after a five-year time jump: The civil war is over, and a cultural revolution has changed the world for better or worse – ushering in a new age of superheroes and supervillains.

“While HBO Max is not moving forward with another season of Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler, we are very thankful to creator Bruno Heller and executive producers Matthew Patnick, Danny Cannon and John Stephens, along with Warner Bros. Television, for their brilliant, unique, gripping depiction of the origin of Alfred Pennyworth, one of the most iconic characters in the Batman world,” said an HBO Max spokesperson. “An incredible blend of action, drama and humor, for three seasons, Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler has taken fans on a mind-bending ride into Alfred’s eccentric world and the beginnings of cutting-edge super heroes and super villains.”

Nope. Not a fan of these hero-adjacent shows. Wish they'd just try to build up other heroes instead of Batman's butler or Superman's grand father.

I did, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was supposed to serve as a prequel to the Gotham television series for the Alfred Pennyworth character of that continuity. It was really good, but like a lot of series that get cancelled prematurely it ended on a cliffhanger that I really would have like to have seen resolved. It is basically the origin of Alfred (Alfie) and how he meets Thomas and Martha Wayne in London and their life before Gotham City. Towards the end of the 2nd season it began to introduce metahumans / powered individuals who were supposedly just starting to appear at that point in time. If you don't have expectations of it being anything similar to Batman then it was a very well written show. It started off pretty grounded and got a little crazier and more comic book like as the series went on. I would have really liked to have seen a fourth and final planned season with it ending with Thomas, Martha and Alfred all permanently relocating to Gotham.

I've watched all of these shows religiously that Warner Brothers has recently cancelled: Pennyworth, Doom Patrol, Titans, Flash, Arrow, Batwoman, Legends of Tomorrow, Stargirl, etc. and I enjoyed all of them. Stupidly I also got exactly two episodes into WestWorld before they removed it from HBO Max. That pissed me off too, but that's what I get for waiting years to watch it, I guess. I'll probably just finish watching that on Tubi when it gets there.
