HBO Max Drops DC Drama 'Dead Boy Detectives' To Netflix

HBO Max has decided to sell the streaming rights of the DC drama Dead Boy Detectives to Netflix. The deal comes a year after the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed streamer gave the green light to series order.

Warner Bros. Television producers shopped the series to other sources after the series didn't fit into the new chapter of content that DC executives James Gunn and Peter Safran are building. It is also said that HBO Max wouldn't be able to market the series until 2024 and allowed producers to shop the series elsewhere.

From Emmy(R) nominee Steve Yockey ("The Flight Attendant"), "Doom Patrol's" Jeremy Carver, Berlanti Productions, and Warner Bros. Television, DEAD BOY DETECTIVES is an eight-episode horror detective series born from DC's "The Sandman" and "Dead Boy Detectives" comics. It's a fresh take on a ghost story that explores loss, grief, and death through the lens of Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland, two dead British teenagers, and their very alive friend, Crystal Palace. So, it's a lot like a vintage detective series - only darker and on acid.

Steve Yockey ("The Flight Attendant," "Supernatural," "Doom Patrol") wrote the pilot episode of DEAD BOY DETECTIVES and serves as showrunner. Yockey, Jeremy Carver ("Doom Patrol," "Supernatural"), Greg Berlanti ("You," "The Flash"), and Sarah Schechter ("The Flight Attendant," "You") are executive producers on the series. Lee Toland Krieger ("Superman & Lois," upcoming "Green Lantern") directed the pilot episode and also served as an executive producer on the pilot alongside David Madden ("Superman & Lois"). Based on characters created for DC by Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner, the series is produced by Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. Yockey, Carver, Berlanti Productions, and Krieger are all under overall deals with WBTV.

George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri ("The Lodge") star as Dead Boy Detectives Edwin Payne (Rexstrew) and Charles Rowland (Revri), and Kassius Nelson ("Last Night in Soho," "Hollyoaks") star as Crystal Palace. Additional series stars include Briana Cuoco ("The Flight Attendant," "Harley Quinn") as Jenny the Butcher, Ruth Connell ("Supernatural") as the Night Nurse (reprising her role from the "Dead Patrol" episode of "Doom Patrol"), Yuyu Kitamura ("The Expatriates") as Niko, and Jenn Lyon ("Claws," "Justified") as Esther.

I didn't even watch. The missus and I would have been much more likely to watch had they stuck with the cast members who appeared on Doom Patrol, but that didn't happen.

yeah shot themselves in the footI didn't even watch any of it

did they even connect it to Doom Patrol?

I stopped watching it after episode one. Could not finish episode two. It feels off, for me.

Well this is annoying. Unlike most DC based live action shows, this was pretty good. Is Sandman S2 even happening, then?

2nd season of Sandman is in development and is happening...

Variety has announced that "Dead Boy Detectives" has been officially canceled by Netflix, marking the end of the series after its sole season, which premiered on April 25.

The series experienced several transitions after receiving a pilot order from Max in 2021, followed by a series order in 2022 before ultimately being acquired by Netflix in 2023. At that time, it was reported that the acquisition occurred because the show, which features characters developed for DC by Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner, was not aligned with the new vision for Max-DC content led by James Gunn and Peter Safran.

At Netflix, the Dead Boy Detectives are integrated into the "Sandman" universe, having initial appearances in "The Sandman" comic seriescurrently, Netflix broadcasts "The Sandman" television series, with a second season in development.

Do you have a pesky ghost haunting you? Has a demon stolen your core memories? You may want to ring the Dead Boy Detectives.

Meet Edwin Payne (George Rexstrew) and Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri), the brains and the brawn behind the Dead Boy Detectives agency. Teenagers born decades apart who find each other only in death, Edwin and Charles are best friends and ghosts who solve mysteries. They will do anything to stick together including escaping evil witches, Hell, and Death herself. With the help of a clairvoyant named Crystal (Kassius Nelson) and her friend Niko (Yuyu Kitamura), they can crack some of the mortal realms most mystifying paranormal cases.

As part of The Sandman Universe for Netflix and based on the beloved comic series from Neil Gaiman, DEAD BOY DETECTIVES was developed for television by Steve Yockey, who serves as co-showrunner alongside Beth Schwartz, and is brought to you by Greg Berlanti. Jeremy Carver and Sarah Schechter also serve as executive producers. The series also stars Kassius Nelson, Briana Cuoco, Yuyu Kitamura, Ruth Connell, and Jenn Lyon.

Dead Boy Detectives premieres on Netflix on April 25th, 2024
