Black And White Version Of 'Godzilla Minus One' To Be Released

TOHO has officially declared through X that a unique monochrome version of Godzilla Minus One will be hitting the big screens in 2024. Director Takashi Yamazaki's translated comments can be found below.

Comment from Director Takashi Yamazaki We are now able to announce ``Godzilla-1.0/C'', which we have been working on for a long time. Rather than just making it monochrome, it is a cut by cut, I had them make adjustments while making full use of various mattes, as if they were creating a new movie. What I was aiming for was a style that looked like it was taken by masters of monochrome photography. We were able to unearth the texture of the skin and the details of the scenery that were hidden in the photographed data. Then, a frightening Godzilla, just like the one in the documentary, appeared. By eliminating color, a new sense of reality emerges. Please live and resist further fear at the theater.

"Godzilla-1.0" is still being shown in theaters nationwide.
Please enjoy both at the theater.

My local theater often skips cool stuff like this, so I was happily surprised to see they were showing it, saw it last Friday.

Godzilla Minus One has achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the highest-grossing live-action Japanese film in North America, with its box office earnings reaching $14.36 million. This success comes after an impressive opening weekend, where it claimed the title of the biggest debut for a foreign film in the United States this year.

To meet the growing demand from audiences, Toho International, the film's distributor, has responded by increasing the number of screens showing the movie. Currently, Godzilla Minus One is being screened in 2,540 locations, a significant increase from the initial 2,308 locations.

During its North American opening, Godzilla Minus One generated an impressive revenue of over $11.4 million. However, it is worth noting that the biggest foreign film opening of the year was Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba, which amassed $10.1 million in March.

Set in post-World War II Japan, the film portrays a nation grappling with the aftermath of the war while facing a new crisis in the form of a colossal monster.

Looks better than any of those "Monarch" Godzilla movies.
