I don't begrudge J.J. Abrams his early success, but his films are terrible, and he has hands in everything from Mission Impossible to a new Bruce Timm Batman cartoon.
The fact that another Star Trek origin story is the best he can come up with (young, sexy new cast!) is proof enough new blood, new ideas are needed.
Lucas criticized his Star Wars film, implying it was too much like Lucas', that the story didn't progress, and Abrams' response was that his idea was "to go backwards to go forwards". He went backwards, all right.
