James Gunn Says He Knows What Batman Fans Want Most

While the world awaits what James Gunn’s new DC Universe Batman will look like, the co-CEO of DC Studio’s recently took to X to discuss the famed hero of Gotham City. In response to a question about if white eyes are the most requested thing for Batman, Gunn said, “The most requested thing would be the blue and grey. Then the yellow around the bat. And THEN the white eyes. But all of those things I find less important than the character himself, the writing, and the person who plays him.”

So, while not a resounding yes, it wasn’t officially a no on these fan favorite aspects of the Dark Knight. But it appears clear that Gunn is more concerned about the storytelling aspects of his Batman debut, The Brave and the Bold. The film will adapt Grant Morrison’s celebrated comic run centered on Bruce Wayne’s biological son, Damian. Gunn is a big fan of this run and is excited to see it adapted to the big screen.

“This is the introduction of the DCU's Batman,” Gunn said while announcing the film in 2023. “This is the story of Damian Wayne, who is Batman's actual son who we didn't know existed for the first eight to ten years of his life. He was raised as a little murderer and assassin. He's a little son of a bitch. He's my favorite Robin. It's based on the Grant Morrison comic book's run, which is one of my favorite Batman runs, and we are putting that all together right now.”

No release date has been set yet for The Brave and the Bold, but Gunn has indicated it is expected to be released before 2030.

For me, the best thing I liked about Damien was the Super Sons comic run.

Really? I don't have an opinion either way, but I hear people complain about movie costumes not having the lenses a LOT.

I can't imagine Batman without the white eyes in the comic and animated universe. And I don't like the exposed eyes of the Batman suits in the films. But I could see how the lenses would be tough to pull off.

I do not mind Damien but not before any of the other Robins appearances.

White eyes???? NO ONE wants those

Gunn has no idea what he's talking about.

Yeah, adding my two cents to the pile - not a Damian Wayne fan either. I've preferred any and all the other Robin incarnations over him. I'm ready for the writers to be done with him and move on. I too prefer Dick Grayson and Tim Drake, but would be fine with a new Robin altogether instead of more Damian Wayne. But that should happen in the comics first (if at all), not a movie reboot.

I hear there are Damian fans, but I found him totally annoying and unappealing. Damian's only value as a character for me would be to have Ras Al Ghul kill him by ironically drowning him in the Lazarus Pit. This way Batman is free from being saddled as a conflicted daddy and writers can use the angst for dramatic mileage. (It worked for Aquaman).

Everyone's got and is entitled to their favorites, but Damien is far from mine when it comes to Robins. I still like the elegance of the trinity of the graduate (Nightwing), the 'failure' (Red Hood) and the then-current (Tim Drake), rather than injecting Damien in there and losing the position and purpose of Tim from there on out. Still, Damien will be an option that will have to change as the DCU goes on - a child actor will age out of the comic's perpetual age range way too quickly to keep the character as he is in the comics.

But yeah, I want the yellow oval back?

If James Gunn thinks the average Batman fan wants Damian Wayne, then I'm not sure he knows too many Batman fans.
