For me, the best thing I liked about Damien was the Super Sons comic run.

I can't imagine Batman without the white eyes in the comic and animated universe. And I don't like the exposed eyes of the Batman suits in the films. But I could see how the lenses would be tough to pull off.

I do not mind Damien but not before any of the other Robins appearances.

Gunn has no idea what he's talking about.
Yeah, adding my two cents to the pile - not a Damian Wayne fan either. I've preferred any and all the other Robin incarnations over him. I'm ready for the writers to be done with him and move on. I too prefer Dick Grayson and Tim Drake, but would be fine with a new Robin altogether instead of more Damian Wayne. But that should happen in the comics first (if at all), not a movie reboot.
I hear there are Damian fans, but I found him totally annoying and unappealing. Damian's only value as a character for me would be to have Ras Al Ghul kill him by ironically drowning him in the Lazarus Pit. This way Batman is free from being saddled as a conflicted daddy and writers can use the angst for dramatic mileage. (It worked for Aquaman).
Everyone's got and is entitled to their favorites, but Damien is far from mine when it comes to Robins. I still like the elegance of the trinity of the graduate (Nightwing), the 'failure' (Red Hood) and the then-current (Tim Drake), rather than injecting Damien in there and losing the position and purpose of Tim from there on out. Still, Damien will be an option that will have to change as the DCU goes on - a child actor will age out of the comic's perpetual age range way too quickly to keep the character as he is in the comics.
But yeah, I want the yellow oval back?
If James Gunn thinks the average Batman fan wants Damian Wayne, then I'm not sure he knows too many Batman fans.
