Two times was a charm, as Five Nights at Freddy's 2 set box office record by achieving the biggest opening weekend ever for the post-Thanksgiving period, earning an estimated $63 million domestically, far surpassing the previous record held by The Last Samurai. This huge debut also pushed it past 1997’s Scream 2 as the top horror film opening for December. Incredibly the sequel didn’t beat out the original movie’s $80 million opening, but it was impressive nonetheless. It added $46.1 million from international markets to total $109.1 million worldwide.
The rest of the U.S. Top 5 Box Office Results for December 5-7:
Zootopia 2 continued its march to a billion as it totaled $43 million domestically and $295.3 million overseas to bring it to $220.47 million/$915.77 million after two weeks.
Another successful sequel, Wicked: For Good, came in third, bringing in $16.7 million to total $296.9 million after three weeks.
GKid’s Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution debuted in fourth this weekend with $10.1 million. This marks GKids’ second-biggest opening ever behind only Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and The Heron, which opened to $12.9 million in December of 2023. The numbers are especially strong when you consider the film was only in 1,833 theaters and is a compilation of scenes from the show’s second season and the first two episodes of the yet-to-be-streamed third season.
Now You See Me: Now You Don’t dropped from third to fifth this week with $3.5 million to bump its 4-week take to $55.3 million. Of note, the original Now You See Me peaked at 117.7 million domestically in 2013 and Now You See Me 2 made $65 million in 2016, so this installment may need a little X-Mas magic to pass either film.
