A Deeper Look: The Top Takeaways from the Supergirl Teaser

December 11, 2025
The teaser trailer for the upcoming Supergirl movie has been released, offering viewers an initial look at its distinct tone, which is notably different from this summer’s Superman film.

Key Takeaways:

- Adaptation of Woman of Tomorrow: The film is largely based on the acclaimed comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. The trailer shows Milly Alcock's Kara Zor-El embarking on a cosmic journey with a young alien girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll (Eve Ridley), who is on a quest for vengeance against the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills, played by Matthias Schoenaerts.

- Jason Momoa as Lobo: The trailer offers a brief glimpse of Jason Momoa as Lobo, the fan-favorite interstellar bounty hunter, who is a new addition to the story not present in the original comic book source material. The role marks Momoa’s first appearance in the newly established DC Universe, following his tenure as Aquaman in the previous DCEU.

- A "Punk Rock" Supergirl: Kara is a jaded 23-year-old who remembers the destruction of Krypton firsthand, making her outlook on life much darker than her cousin's. The trailer reinforces this with a scene showing her waking up hungover, accompanied by Blondie's "Call Me." Director Craig Gillespie, known for his work on I, Tonya and Cruella, appears to be continuing his "jukebox" directing style here, so expect a killer soundtrack.

- A Space Adventure: DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has described the film as a "space fantasy" with a tone similar to Guardians of the Galaxy, distinct from the Earth-bound Superman film. The set pieces and costumes certainly make it feel like Guardians or Firefly in a very good way. The trailer shows a variety of alien settings, including a brief flashback to Krypton where the city of Kandor is being bottled, teasing the potential introduction of Brainiac, the main villain for the upcoming Superman sequel.

Honestly I didn't even know this trailer had come out, Oops, anyways, Wow I can't tell you how much I didn't care when I watched this, this is just Guardians of the galaxy with a different lead, I felt nothing for this, I wasn't amused particularly with the Superman movie, I don't really have strong feelings about this, other then I feel bored and feel little intrigue, it just has a really been there done that and played vibe.

I liked that they saved lobo for the official trailer one

He produced it, hiring both the writer and director of this movie, and he cast Milly Alcock in the role, who made her first appearance as Supergirl in the Superman movie he wrote and directed. And of course, Gunn has strong influence over the look and story, as this is part of his DC Universe.

I get that, but usually whenever it's stated "xxxxx's [movie title]" xxxxx's refers to the director. Just sounds a little misleading that he was involved in this movie as much as Superman, that's all.

Yeah, if Supergirl were photoshopped out of this trailer, I would have guessed it was for Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 4.

Strong been there, done that feeling.

It has a bit of a Guardians of the Galaxy vibe, but we'll see how it turns out. Lobo looks good (from what we've seen so far). Ever since I first saw him in the Superman cartoon, I've been thinking about who could play him in a movie. At the time, I thought Hulk Hogan would have been perfect, both in terms of his face and physique, but let's hope Momoa will be good too.

Feels a little GOTG. But there are stories like that. Haven't read the comic it's supposed to be based on yet. I choose optimism.
