Hollywood giant Disney has signed a deal with OpenAI, investing $1B in the artificial intelligence company. The three-year licensing agreement will allow users of OpenAI’s Sora app to create content with the likes of Iron Man, Darth Vader, and Baymax. Disney is the first major licensing partner on Sora, which enables users to create short-form videos with text prompts.

Disney CEO Bob Iger said in a statement, “Technological innovation has continually shaped the evolution of entertainment, bringing with it new ways to create and share great stories with the world. The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence marks an important moment for our industry, and through this collaboration with OpenAI we will thoughtfully and responsibly extend the reach of our storytelling through generative AI, while respecting and protecting creators and their works. Bringing together Disney’s iconic stories and characters with OpenAI’s groundbreaking technology puts imagination and creativity directly into the hands of Disney fans in ways we’ve never seen before, giving them richer and more personal ways to connect with the Disney characters and stories they love.”

Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, added: “This agreement shows how AI companies and creative leaders can work together responsibly to promote innovation that benefits society, respect the importance of creativity, and help works reach vast new audiences.”

Disney characters available to use on Sora will include Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Lilo, Stitch, Ariel, Belle, Beast, Cinderella, Simba, Mufasa, as well as characters from the worlds of Frozen, Moana, Monsters Inc., Toy Story, and Zootopia. Also featured will be animated versions of Marvel and Lucasfilm characters like Hulk, Captain America, Deadpool, Thor, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Yoda.

What is excluded are depictions of live-action actors, with the press release noting that Disney and OpenAI will “respect the rights of individuals to appropriately control the use of their voice and likeness.” The release added, “OpenAI and Disney have affirmed a shared commitment to maintaining robust controls to prevent the generation of illegal or harmful content.”

Disney is going to immediately regret a deal with Sora. They obviously haven't seen what Sora has already done with the Pixar style animation (i.e. racism, misogyny, lampooning special needs children, 9/11, and murder victims, etc).

As many of you might know, but for those who don't, "A.I" is a misnomer. The people who work in the field call it machine learning, and anytime I have the chance to spread that gospel, I take it, as "A.I." implies some kind of sentience, when it's just 1's and 0's.

The work of the animators, the personalities created by the writers, will get input by data entry workers into a program, and none of those creatives will get reimbursed.

Disney has always licensed their characters on everything. Walk through any dollar store and you'll see. When they bought Marvel, Spidey joined the bonanza.

(On a side note, this is part of why i stopped buying licensed apparel and artworks. 1., If a corporation wants to use me a billboard, they can pay me, 2. Bob Layton pointed out o Twitter a few years back artists never get compensated. His famous Iron Man cover? His contract was to create a piece of comic book art, not dish towels, not T-shirts, not mirrors and lampshades.)

The bigger picture is, Disney is investing in beta testing or R & D, so they never have to pay creatives again.

No more Howard Ashman, no more Robert Downey, Jr. or Julie Andrews. No more Ward Kimball. So long, George Lucas. What did they ever give us, anyway?

Regardless, I cannot wait to use Sora to create a video of Iger crowning himself king and dropping piles from a fighter jet across Disney theme parks, the Burbank studios, and Walt's grave.

Disney just keeps doing whatever it can to destroy it's legacy for a quick monetary gain. They can afford lawyers to run around conventions and hand out cease and desist letters but are unwilling to pay creatives. And now any jackwagon that wants to have AI spit out Little Mermaid being "courted" by Goofy can do so now with Disney's help(the "robust controls" haven't worked anywhere on any model). What a farce.

This is the turning point, where our childhood characters are getting ruined? I have no answer to this, but an interesting topic as several good content creator's work was taken down by the big D, and now anyone is able to make a bunch of videos for not much reason.
