Weekend Box Office: Avatar: Fire and Ash tops US Box Office as it Passes $1 Billion Worldwide

Avatar: Fire and Ash remained on top domestic box office during the first weekend of the new year as the franchise’s latest chapter earned $40 million in its third weekend. Those numbers pushed the film to $306 million domestically and $1.08 billion globally after 18 days in theaters. Comparing Fire and Ash to previous Avatar films, The Way of Water earned $1 billion in 14 days, and the original Avatar took 17 days. Both of those movies went on to surpass $2 billion worldwide.

The rest of the U.S. Top 5 Box Office Results for January 2-4:

Disney’s Zootopia 2 held on to the No. 2 spot with $19 million domestically. After six weekends of release, the animated sequel has grossed $363 million domestically and $1.588 billion globally to become Walt Disney Animation’s highest-grossing movie of all time.

Lionsgate’s campy thriller The Housemaid starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried rose to No. 3 with $15.2 million. The R-rated film, with a modest $35 million budget, has earned $75.7 million in North America and $133 million worldwide.

Marty Supreme dropped to fourth place with $12.5 million. So far, the Timothee Chalamet-led ping-pong flick has generated $56 million in North America, making it one of A24’s largest grossing films ever.

Sony’s Anaconda remained in fifth place with $10 million. After two weekends of release, the comedy reboot of 1997’s Anaconda has grossed $45.8 million in North America and $88 million worldwide.
