HBO is developing a Baldur’s Gate TV series based on Wizards of the Coast’s acclaimed video game franchise, with Craig Mazin—co-creator of The Last Of Us—serving as creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner for this adaptation. Chris Perkins, formerly Head of Story at Wizards of the Coast (a Hasbro subsidiary known for the Dungeons & Dragons universe), will act as a consultant.
The Baldur’s Gate TV series will continue the story beyond the events of Baldur’s Gate 3, exploring how both returning and new characters grapple with the consequences that follow. With no concurrent Baldur’s Gate game in development, Mazin has latitude regarding the direction of the story, allowing for an expanded format more typical of traditional television series, as opposed to being constrained by pre-existing source material. The series intends to be ongoing, drawing primarily from the narrative arc of Baldur’s Gate 3. However, certain thematic elements shared across the other previous titles and rooted in Dungeons & Dragons lore will be incorporated, consistent with Mazin’s agreement with Wizards of the Coast.
