Paramount Not Moving Forward with Max Landis’ Cobra-centric G.I. Joe Script

by Shawn Kirk
March 15, 2026
Paramount Pictures and Hasbro are passing on the script treatment for a new G.I. Joe movie from screenwriter Max Landis, son of director John Landis. The studio is still in talks with and waiting on scripts from other writers, including Danny McBride.

Landis told Variety, via Instagram, that he was “tremendously grateful to have been given the opportunity.” He noted that his pitch came together “very serendipitously based on the coolness of the weird and subversive idea.” That idea centered on terrorist organization Cobra, “having successfully taken over the world and reduced GI Joe to a conspiracy theory. But this is just how big IP development always is. Honestly, I was surprised it was reported at all.”

At 76, Larry Hama would write circles around anyone else. Hollywood, he created the characters. Give him a ring if you want it done right.

Stop overthinking, stop being meta, and just hire people who are genuinely passionate about such projects.

I never read Lord of the Rings, but, man, that production team did, and they put their love on the screen. Same with James Cameron and the Titanic tragedy. Guess what? People showed up. Crazy, I know.

At this point this is great news. There are plenty of other talented screenwriters, who do not have that many controversial background stuff which is the last thing our fandom needs.

Well at least they seemed to have abandoned moving forward with the terrible Transformers x Joe crossover they had teased at the end of Beast wars movie, that made my skin crawl, so thank you for that.

but like in all reality how hard can it be to make a good G.I. Joe Movie? like I could write one today.

Here's my pitch:G.I. Joe is the codename for America's daring, highly trained, special mission force. Its purpose: To defend human freedom against Cobra, a ruthless, terrorist organization determined to rule the world.Pay me, Hollywood!

Like every IP that gets made into a movie he was over thinking this. We don't need some wierd unique take on G.I. Joe we just need G.I. Joe.

It's weird that the success of Sonic, Mario, and, to a lesser extent, the early MCU movies didn't convince people that reimaginings are less successful than faithful versions. Just make the source material and you have a built-in audience. Change it radically, and you alienate the built-in audience. And a G.I. Joe movie is never going to attract enough casual fans to compensate for alienating G.I. Joe fans.

It is interesting, though, that his idea resembles strongly an episode from the original TV series where a Joe crosses into a world where Cobra has won and G.I. Joe is the underground.

Y'all are walking right up to the line of getting political here. One could argue it's already been crossed. I advise everyone to be very VERY careful from now on.

They'll fight for the oligarchy wherever there's trouble G.I. Joe i$ there!

We have a solid G.I. Joe plot happening in reality right now. Please make a more serious movie that doesn't suck like all the others.

I don't get why we need two different movies. It seems like they're gonns do some some wierd take om GI joe, when they need to just do a straigjt up joe movie.
