Prime Video Cancels Stargate Reboot

Amazon MGM Studios has officially cancelled the new Stargate series that was in development for Prime Video, pulling the plug just six months after it was greenlit. The series, which received a full order in November 2025, was being spearheaded by franchise veteran Martin Gero (who previously worked on Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis).

A report from Variety cites Amazon executives felt that Gero’s script and creative direction leaned too heavily on satisfying existing, hardcore Stargate lore. They feared the show would fail to attract new audiences outside of the core fanbase. The cancellation also followed a recent corporate restructuring at Amazon MGM Studios. The executives who originally championed and greenlit Gero's vision departed the company, leaving the incoming management team less attached to the project.

The decision comes as a shock to fans, given that the show had already completed a 20-week writers' room and was actively ramping up pre-production in the UK.

Not really a fan of the major trends, passion projects are not welcome. Basically it's now strategy over content, just because they want to maximize the number of audience. Maybe it's better to not do all the sloppy work for a franchise that deserves so much more.

Not made for modern audiences.

Imagine a show getting rejected because it would appeal to longtime fans. This is how/why our major franchises have been flatlined.

That's a shame. I've never seen the shows, but my wife LOVES Stargate and I was looking forward to delving into this with her.

"...creative direction leaned too heavily on satisfying existing, hardcoreStargatelore. They feared the show would fail to attract new audiences outside of the core fanbase". Uhm, the reason they were even considering doing the reboot was BECAUSE of that "core fanbase"! They were what fueled the financial success of the show, which spawned a lucrative franchise. We see this time and again in movies, tv, comic books: someone sees a highly successful entity, wants to re-do it, only to hollow it out because they don't really respect the things that made it successful in the first place.

So why not just do something New and Original?

To Amazon: Couldn't twist Stargate to make it a solely unique property for you folks? Couldn't find stuff to license out for merch?

Why just why we are just fine with the original series and the spinoffs

Except that atlantis left us some nice stories not told. I'd like to see the story continue to grow.

A new movie would be better. (Just don't let Jared Leto be in it.)?

Can't they give Stargate a rest, how many darn Stargate shows can we have? and everyone of them was the same, and looked like it was filmed by goats, and the writing was done by said same goats, and the actors were goats in human costumes...

Stargate (movie), SG1, Atlantis, Universe, Origins, Infinity, Ark of Truth, Continum :S

think of something NEW!

The people responsible for sacking the first people have been sacked. Instead we have hired 14 whopping lamas. In all sincerity, another stargate series could be good or bad. I need to watch origins, but I'd love to get this world revisited.
