Parmount Moving Forward With New G.I. Joe Movie Script From Danny McBride?!?

During an interview on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, American actor, comedian, producer, and screenwriter Danny McBride said he had finished writing a script for a new Paramount G.I. Joe live-action movie.

He said the "suspenseful action movie" would follow Duke and a group of other Joes. He also said it would take place in Springfield, a town controlled by Cobra which is in reference to a story line from the original Marvel Comics G.I. Joe series.

He also noted that there are a number of "interesting" people who are in talks to star in the film, and they're hoping to start shooting the movie next year.

McBride originally wanted to do a movie about the Dreadnoks but Paramount executives said they needed to do a G.I. Joe proper movie to relaunch the franchise first.

G.I. Joe's success at the box office has not been a stellar one with the most recent 2021 G.I. Joe origin film Snake Eyes being considered a major box office bomb having only brought in $40.1 million worldwide against an $88 to $110 million production budget.

Action figure based movies in general have also struggled at the box office. Most recently we saw Amazon MGM's Masters of the Universe movie which opened in theaters on June 5 perform badly at the box office despite overall positive reviews. Heading into the 4th Of July weekend it has only brought in $110 million worldwide (about $62.7 million domestically). The production budget for that one has been said to be $170–$200 million.

So we will see if Paramount truly decides to move forward with a new G.I. Joe movie or not, but for now McBride seems excited about the project, lets just hope the joke's not on him.
