¡Viva Calavera!, the Mexican creative studio behind the luchador-inspired animated series Rey Mysterio vs. The Darkness, will make its formal U.S. debut at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. The event marks a significant milestone for the studio, featuring the first public U.S. screening of the action-comedy cartoon. Co-created alongside WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio, the 2D series blends Mexican mythology, lucha libre culture, and anime-styled visual storytelling.
A special panel titled "Rey Mysterio vs. The Darkness: From Screen to Comics" is scheduled for Saturday, July 25. Rey Mysterio will appear live alongside the show’s creators, the Calavera Hermanos (Gemelo Catrina Primero, Gemelo Catrina Segundo, and Mestizo Enmascarado). The panel will be moderated by acclaimed animator, writer, and director Jorge R. Gutierrez.
Beyond the panel, the Calavera Hermanos will host two dedicated signing sessions at the convention on Thursday, July 23 and Friday, July 24.
Executive produced and voiced by Rey Mysterio, the 10-episode series originally premiered in Latin America on Max and Cartoon Network, garnering widespread critical acclaim. The story follows a young boy named Oscar who teams up with his wrestling idol, Rey Mysterio, to take down supernatural forces and an evil fighter named Uroboros.
Following its public debut at San Diego Comic-Con, the studio has lined up exclusive industry screenings at DreamWorks Animation, Disney and Pixar as they finalize plans for a broader global rollout.
