Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed in an August shareholder letter that the next chapter of the Matrix sci-fi franchise is officially in development. The project will be written and directed by Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods, Project Hail Mary) with franchise co-creator Lana Wachowski attached as an executive producer. This would mark the first time a film in the series is not helmed directly by a Wachowski sibling.
Official plot details, premise descriptions, and character breakdowns remain under wraps. Additionally, no actors—including franchise mainstays Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss—have been confirmed to return.
The studio has placed the project on its long-term roadmap for release strictly "beyond 2027," indicating a premiere window no earlier than 2028.
