Disney Announces Zootopia 3 in the Works

Disney is moving forward with a third installment of its blockbuster Zootopia franchise. The studio announced Zootopia 3 at its D23 event in Anaheim, with Ginnifer Goodwin and Ke Huy Quan taking the stage to reveal the next chapter in the animated series. The upcoming film will shift the spotlight to birds, though further plot details remain under wraps.

The announcement comes on the heels of the record-breaking performance of Zootopia 2, which grossed $1.8 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing Hollywood animated movie of all time.

The franchise launched in 2016 with Zootopia, which introduced audiences to Judy Hopps (Goodwin), an ambitious rabbit who joins the Zootopia Police Department, and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), a sly fox and professional con artist. Initially at odds, the unlikely pair ultimately teamed up to investigate a mystery threatening the animal metropolis. The film was a major global hit, surpassing $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Its success also spawned Zootopia+, a Disney+ spinoff series that expanded the world and introduced new stories and characters from the city’s animal inhabitants.

With Zootopia 3, Disney is betting that audiences are ready to return once again to the sprawling animal metropolis — this time with a new group of feathered residents at the center of the story.
