Sony Pictures and Story Kitchen are teaming up to bring The Drifter, the pulpy adventure video game from Australian indie developer and publisher Powerhoof, to the big screen. The studios have acquired the live-action feature film rights to the game, with Story Kitchen’s Dmitri M. Johnson and Michael Lawrence Goldberg set to produce.
The Drifter follows a nomadic drifter who witnesses a brutal murder before being drowned by a squad of high-tech soldiers. When he awakens, he finds himself fighting for survival while uncovering a dark conspiracy involving shadowy corporations and a madman’s obsession. The game blends pulp adventure with science fiction and mystery.
The project marks another video game adaptation for Story Kitchen, which has established a growing slate of projects based on prominent game properties. Its upcoming titles include Tomb Raider projects at Prime Video and Netflix, Life Is Strange at Prime Video, a Just Cause feature at Universal and Sega’s Streets of Rage movie at Lionsgate, among others.
