John Mulaney is in talks to headline a new reimagining of Get Smart, which is in the early stages of development at Warner Bros. Seth Grahame-Smith, whose credits include Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, is attached to write the screenplay.
Created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, the original Get Smart series premiered on NBC in 1965. Don Adams starred as Maxwell Smart, the bumbling but determined secret agent.
The property most recently made its way to the big screen in 2008 with Steve Carell taking on the lead role, alongside Anne Hathaway and Dwayne Johnson.
For Mulaney, the potential role would add another high-profile project to an increasingly busy acting résumé. He first made his name as a writer and performer on Saturday Night Live before becoming one of comedy’s most recognizable voices through acclaimed specials including John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch and Baby J on Netflix.
Mulaney has also expanded into acting and voice work in recent years. He voices a main character on the animated hit Big Mouth and has landed roles in projects including FX’s The Bear. He is also set to appear in David O. Russell’s upcoming John Madden biopic.
With Mulaney potentially taking on the iconic Maxwell Smart role, the new Get Smart could put a distinctly modern spin on one of television’s classic spy spoofs. The project remains in early development, and further casting and production details have yet to be announced.
