Netflix Plans Wide Theatrical Release for KPop Demon Hunters Sequel

Netflix plans to give the sequel to KPop Demon Hunters a broad theatrical release, marking a significant change from the first film’s debut strategy.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said the animated sequel will be part of the streaming company’s expanding efforts to bring select films to theaters.

“When the KPop Demon Hunters sequel comes, you can expect a very broad theatrical release,” Sarandos said.

Sarandos said Netflix is exploring ways to accommodate audiences who want to experience certain films in theaters while continuing to preserve their value on the streaming service.

The company has increasingly experimented with theatrical releases, particularly for animated films. Netflix currently has a 47-day wide theatrical release planned for Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory.

The original KPop Demon Hunters, directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans and produced by Sony Pictures Animation, premiered exclusively on Netflix in June 2025. The film went on to become Netflix’s most-watched original film. A sing-along version subsequently received a limited theatrical release.

Netflix officially announced the sequel earlier this year. Kang and Appelhans are set to return as directors, with Sony Pictures Animation again producing the film.

My daughter knew this months ago. She's even been telling me the release date: 2027. She isn't going to be that far off, though I have no idea where an 8-year old got inside info.

I believe the voice actresses made a video post thanking their fans and let them know about their "next tour" a little while back.

The most obvious move for netfix. I hope it's as good as the first.
