In an inspiring tale of
festive improvisation, local collector
Mark has decided to repurpose his
pile of shame (
also known as the depression pile, the unholy tower of unopened toys, or the cardboard mountain of regret) into a
toy collector advent calendar, opening one action figure a day until
Christmas.

"
Every December, people open a little door to find a nice surprise..." explained Mark. "
I decided to open a dusty shipping box I forgot I had that I received in April. Same thing, really!"
According to reports, Mark has enough
unopened action figures to assemble an
advent calendar for the next four years. For this Christmas, he simply stacked 24 unboxed items in a vaguely pyramid-like shape and slapped a number on each one: "
It's not structurally sound..." his partner noted while eyeing the wobbling pile, "
...but neither is his relationship with pre-orders, so it evens out."
Day 1:
A Mezco figure he preordered in 2022.
Day 2 revealed
a NECA figure he swears he bought "for custom fodder".
Day 3 was
a Marvel Legends figure still minty fresh in its Hasbro Pulse shipping box.
Day 4 was
a MOTU New Eternia Moss Man from a few months ago
Day 5,
a S.H.Figuarts The Lord of The Rings figure he didn't open, thinking he'll take pictures for a review and completely forgot about
And so on, and so on...
Mark says the excitement is real: "
It's magical! Every day, I discover something new I bought during a sale I don't remember. It's like past-me is Santa... but more irresponsible!". His friends believe this could start a new holiday trend among collectors:
using their depression pile to "finally justify its existence".
Toy companies, sensing an opportunity, are allegedly considering releasing official "
Pile of Shame Advent Calendars", which would simply contain 24 random figures from their back-stock warehouses.
