Fresh Monkey Fiction and BigBadWorkShop Operation: Monster Force Season 03 (Part 1) Review and Images

It's Wednesday and you know what that means: ToyFarce review!

This week, we're having a look at the Operation: Monster Force Season 03 (Part 1) figures from Fresh Monkey Fiction and BigBadWorkShop! More characters, more lore, more figures from that great toy line, with the addition of a real life character in this wave (no, it's not the ambassador of R'lyeh!).

Season 3 takes place after the death of notorious warlock Johnny Spectre, whose collection of artifacts is now up for auction. Mr. Legacy and Declan Van Helsing suspect the Forgotten King will try to steal the Staff of the Crimson Moon, which contains a moon stone, and use it for his evil army. Doctor Rand is also after the staff to make Kiloworg werewolves unstoppable. But what they didn't expect was that more players might show up at the auction as well, some to buy the staff, some to steal it and some to destroy it!

Operation: Monster Force previous reviews: Season 01, The Donner Party, Season 02 and Zero, and Chatsworth.

Mr. Legacy is a mysterious figure who calls himself a witness to history. He has been seen at events dating back to the 1800s. His knowledge and help has been invaluable for Operation: Monster Force. He comes with 2 heads, 2 pairs of hands, a cane, an open book, a closed book and a stand. A rather basic figure for the line but an important character, I love the detail that his skin under his hood, behind the mask seems to be rotten or mummified...

Commander Gridiron has been the arms dealer for Operation: Monster Force, providing them with custom made weapons to deal with their enemies. "A crossbow bolt that delivers a payload of liquified garlic?  Yeah, I got some ideas..." If he looks familiar, it's because the figure is based on Mark Vuncannon, the actual person behind Gridiron Studios, who has been making high quality props and weapons for action figures of all sizes. Having him as a character in the line was a no-brainer, since he also helps with the design of the weapons. He comes with 3 heads (a standard one that is not so great, a vastly improved second one and a Skullcrusher helmet), 4 pairs of hands, a drum-fed auto shotgun, a gun, a knife, additional pouches and a stand.

The Red Demon is part of a group of 13 warriors, the 13 Ghosts of Yamatai,  who pledged their souls and sword to protect queen Himiko in ancient Japan . Their souls were embedded into their masks, and after the Forgotten King uneathed Himiko's tomb, her guardians also came back. The Red Demon mask apparently took possession of a tax accountant (I swear!), and has joined Operation: Monster Force in order to return his queen's tomb. He is a fierce warrior, and sees himself as an ally, but not a member of the team. He comes with 4 pairs of hands, 2 katana, 2 sais, 2 kusarigama with a chain or a straight attachment, a backpack than can actually hold all those weapons and a stand. It's a great figure, mixing the articulations and accessories of the Operation: Monster Force line with more samurai parts.

The Goblin is also part of the 13 Ghosts of Yamatai. However, his spirit has turned malicious over the millenia, and seems to enjoy making others suffer. He has joined a criminal organization and uses his skills as an expert trapper to kidnap people and torture them. He comes with 5 Pairs of hands, a green katana with a sheath, 2 spider drones with explosive effects, a trap in the shape of a dragon and a stand. This one is a bit simpler than the Red Demon, with a normal suit body and the masked head. His accessories are pretty great, with a nice green color.

Doctor Tannis Rand is a renowned geneticist who is also the last descendant from the werewolves from the  Cult of the Crimson Moon. He has been brought in by the Forgotten King to create an army of werewolves to fight Dracula and Operation: Monster Force's vampire soldiers. He comes with 3 heads (Doctor Rand, werewolf doctor Rand and a "Dr Tokzen" head which is a tribute to Dr Venom), 8 pairs of hands, a syringe gun, a laser gun, a suitcase with serum and a stand.

Last, but not least, the Ambassador of R'lyeh. The Forgotten King has met with pretty unsavory individuals to join his army, and this might be the scariest. R'lyeh is said to be an alien city deep in the pacific ocean, where a giant tentacled god sleeps (ring any bell?). The ambassador of R'lyeh comes with 3 heads (hooded, hooded mid-transformation and a very Cthulhu-esque head), 4 pairs of hands, a closed book, an open book with a tentacle coming out of it (which is awesome), 2 spell effects and a stand. This is the highlight of the wave for me. This figure looks gnarly in all the best ways.

If you pick up the entire wave, BigBadToyStore had a bonus pack with extra heads, which include a red Skullcrusher helmet, an alternate mask for Mr.Legacy (that kinda looks like he has a TV show where he reveals how magic tricks are done...), and a human head for the Ambassador of R'lyeh which has a striking resemblance with a certain author who wrote about ancient tentacled gods (wink wink).

The next 'seasons' will have some fantastic figures, such as a red riding hood, a weaponized nun, a creature from the sea (or a lagoon that would be black) and many more... Those were on display at SDCC this year.

You can get this wave and other Operation: Monster Force figures from our sponsor BigBadToyStore.
