Mondo Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Donatello 1/6 Scale Figure Review and Images

It's Wednesday and you know what that means: ToyFarce review!

This week, we're having a look at the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Donatello (Timed Edition) 1/6 scale figure from Mondo! What a gorgeous, amazing figure! Donatello looks fantastic right outside of the box, and the swappable eyes and little easter eggs all over the figure are just the cherry on top. And it's just the first one in the line! The team at Mondo killed it with this one, and I cannot wait for the other 3 brothers to come out!

The box comes with great art on the front, and a flap that opens into comic book pages, from Jason Bischoff and Aaron Conley. It's a windowed box, but... the figure is covered with protective plastic so you don't really see it, which kinda defeats the purpose of the windowed box, but it protects the figure, so it's necessary... Another packaging that will be hard to get rid of. Damn you, Mondo!

Donatello comes with 4 heads with 4 sets of interchangeable eyes (3 white ones and 1 with pupils), 6 pairs of hands, 2 bandana attachements, a power glove with 2 corresponding hands, his goggles, his eyeglasses, a screwdriver, a wrench, a turtle communicator, a Metalhead head, his bo staff, an electric E-bo staff with 2 electric effects, a grappling hook, a hand blade, a kunai blade, a kyoketsu-shoge blade (the ones the original action figures had), 2 throwing stars, 2 Mouse-bros (Newton and Magellan), and a nice stand. The heads all open at the bandana, so you can swap the eyes to have pupils or not. The main nitpick I have seen it online is about the eyes, which could have had other options, considering there's 3 sets of the same white eyes. We could have had pupils looking sideways for example. I imagine we'll get more with future releases which might be compatible with the older ones...

The folks at Mondo have been saying during their livestream that those figures are from their own design, a version of what would have happened if the adventures of the turtles from the 90's movies had continued, and gave them a slightly more modern look. I love the design of that Donatello so much, by Brian and Denis Kucharek, Hector Arce and Peter Santa-Maria, with sculpting by Brian and Denis Kucharek and Brandon Gash and paint by Mark Bristow. The textures on the skin and the shell are great, along with the easter eggs in the design/scultping (the calculator on his arm spells M.O.N.D.O, there's a gecko on his fanny pack, which at first glance at the promo pics, I thought was arabic writing, probably spelling Mondo ...).

Comparison with Mondo Animated Series Batman, and Hot Toys Batman Returns Batman

Mondo has already put the Leonardo 1/6 scale figure, the next one in the line up for pre-order back in March, which will look awesome, and I have a feeling we're going to see more of them next week at the San Diego Comic Con. Looking forward to see the 4 brothers together, and if the line will continue after that.

Heroes in more than a Half Shell? Yes, that's right there! This project is very ambitious, and with that load of gear and stuff, I can easily see these figures to be presented in the front row on the collector shelves. Excellent review, huge thanks for the showcase!

There are some qualms to be had strictly from a looks perspective: the eyes and the shell design. The irises are a bit larger than I remember the movies ever being. I'm thinking even a 10% reduction could fix this for me. The separation from the inner chest to the shell was also a tad jarring as it's not clear that they've ever really needed that amount of articulation in the upper torso.. but it still looks great from most angles. Does it really help with posing?

I agree with the eyes, the pupils are a little too big, but it's not bothering. They're clearly better on the smiling head, also. The chest does 'float' a bit in the shell, and I don't know if it helps with posing much, but since I didn't have any hindrance when posing the figure, maybe it does??

One thing to be careful with is the wrist pegs when changing hands, which can separate in half when you change the hands. They're easy to put back in, but it does happen (happened to me twice, but after that, I just held them better when pulling the hands and it didn't happen anymore).
