Mondo Over The Garden Wall Chapter 1 (Limited Edition) Figure Set Review and Images

This week, we're having a look at the limited edition og the Over The Garden Wall Chapter 1 figure set from Mondo! It's September, the fall season will soon start, and what better time is there to have a look at that wonderful set. Over The Garden Wall has become a mandatory rewatch every autumn season for me, and I would have never thought we'd not only get toys from it, but amazing ones at that! Huge kudos to everyone involved at Mondo!

Over The Garden Wall is a dark fantasy animated mini-series created by Patrick McHale for Cartoon Network. It follows 2 brothers wandering through a mysterious forest, looking for a way home, and encountering a variety of strange and fantastical things on their journey (thanks Wikipedia!). The brothers Wirt and Greg are voiced by Elijah Wood (you might have heard of him) and Collin Dean, and the 10 episode mini-series has some amazing voice acting by Christopher Lloyd, Tim Curry (R.I.P.), John Cleese, Melanie Lynskey and many more. It also has a great old timey soundtrack, and is perfect for the fall season. The first episode is available on Youtube, if you want to check it out!

The figure set is similar to the Mondo Squads, with a variety of small characters with minimal articulations and interchangeable limbs to put them in various poses. The set was designed by Leanne Hannah, beautifully sculpted by the talented Brandon Gash and painted by Mara Ancheta (I really love when companies give credit to the artists). The packaging, as is tradition with Mondo, looks gorgeous, with art and design by Jordan Christianson, reminding of the title cards of the episodes.








The standard version includes the figures of Wirt and Greg, an extra head (or 'portrait') for Wirt and an extra head ('portrait') for Greg, their hats, 3 different capes for Wirt (closed, semi close and open), interchangeable arms and additional hands for both figures, an arm with Greg's Frog (aka Kitty aka George Washington aka Dr Cucumber... the name varies), Beatrice the bird, a turtle, an axe and stands for both figures. The limited edition added the Dog in his evil form.

"You hear that? Do you think it's some kind of deranged lunatic with an axe waiting out there in the darkness for innocent victims?"


"Maybe I can help you? I mean, you guys are lost, right?"


"I'm just saying you're weird, like... not normal? Oh my god, stop talking to it... - 'It'?!"




"WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE? EXPLAIN YOURSELVES!"


I can't say enough how much I love this set. The figures look like they've been taken right out of the screen. I had the first episode playing in the background and was trying to put the figures in similar poses while taking the pictures. I don't think there will ever be a better version of those (I don't see a Revoltech Amazing Yamaguchi figure of Greg or a MAFEX Wirt looking better). The team at Mondo did a fantastic job.

There is a second figure set for Chapter 2, which includes the Pottsfield pumpkin people, that is currently shipping (we will have a review for those as well as soon as they arrive), and Mondo had the figures from the third chapter in display at SDCC, which I imagine will go up for pre-order soonish.
