It's
Wednesday and you know what that means:
ToyFarce review!
This week, we're having a look at the second wave of the
9 To 5 Warriors figures! If you liked the late 80's/early 90's toy lines like the
Food Fighters, these are for you! It's a similar concept, but around
office supplies rather than only food (
which is not excluded!).
"
A 90's inspired action figure series recapturing the magic of the Saturday Morning Cartoon era. When you punch out, they come punch'n in!". That's the pitch for the
9 To 5 Warriors line, and it's pretty spot on! After the great reception of the first wave, which included a
tape dispenser, an
eraser, a
donut and
stack of Pringles, the
9 To 5 Warriors brand had another Kickstarter campaign for their second wave with more fun ideas and designs, including a pizza slice that looks like it came right out of the
Food Fighters line. The
packaging has great art on the front, and a comic with the backstory on the back. In a nutshell, a spilled energy drink and an electric shock gave life to all those office supplies, and there are 2 factions fighting: the
Water Cooler Commandos and the
Break Room Bandits. There is also a bio for each figure.
Brigadier Bouncy is a ball of rubber bands, from the
Water Cooler Commandos. He comes with a
bazooka that is made of a
marker, a
pencil, a
binder clip and a
pen cap.
Ingenious! His arms are articulated. Bouncy is quite heavy, but has good balance.

Specialist Sugar was a bag of sweetener and is now a fierce shape shifter (
the aspartame being a powder, she can take many forms). She's a member of the
Break Room Bandits, and comes with different attachments for her arms (
2 normal arms, one big fist, one pointy sword arm and a shield). Battle has never been so
sweet!

Sergeant Spore is an old moldy sandwich that came to life (
as old moldy sandwiches sometimes do). He comes with a
crossbow that is made up of a
binder clip, a
pen cap, a
tack and a
rubber band (
most likely stolen from Brigadier Bouncy during a battle). His codename is
BLT (
Big Load of Trouble). The details are fun on this one, he has a
band aid on his back (
eww!).

Next are the 2 pencils, with first,
Lieutenant Lead. He's part of the
Water Cooler Commandos, and has a weapon made with a
pen cap and a
rubber band, with the projectile being a
tack.

The other pencil,
Number 2, is part of the
Break Room Bandits. He comes with one of those
tiny swords that are used to pick appetizers or in cocktails. While
Lieutenant Lead still had his eraser intact,
Number 2 has been sharpened on both sides. He used to be in the other faction, but his rebellious nature made him leave.

Commodore Crisps had a normal colored version in the first wave, and this one is a variant, with a '
Jinsei infused glow'. I was already a big fan of the one from the first wave, the concept of having '
Pringles'-like chips figures that can stack to make a bigger figure is brilliant. This
translucent green glow-in-the-dark version is equally awesome. Now to decide if I display them stacked or as 3 separate figures...

Last but not least,
Slice Age. An old pizza slice, which comes with a
pizza slicer and one of those
mini plastic table looking things that come in pizza delivery boxes.
Absolute genius. I think it's fair to say everyone fell in love with it the minute it was revealed, since it has been sold out everywhere.
9 To 5 Warriors announced a re-issue will happen soon. The details on it are great: there are
mushrooms growing on it, a corner has some
frozen effect (that can be removed), it has
prehistoric drawings on its back and a necklace with a
tooth. There's also a
translucent blue version of it, for a more frozen style.

The
9 To 5 Warriors is a great line for those nostalgic of the toys from the late 80s/early 90s. My only nitpick is that they are made of rather solid plastic, while I would have loved it if they had the same kinda hollow, soft vinyl that the
Food Fighters had, for them to feel just right. They're still a fantastic concept with great, fun designs and I'm looking forward to see what they come up with next!
