SHAZAM! – With an exclamation of his name, a clap of lightning strikes and the wizard SHAZAM! Grants BILLY BASTON the powers of Captain to protect himself and fight evil.
Appearance
Captain Marvel to me is sculpted after his appearances with the Marvel family, albeit in a more realistic style. He isn’t overly muscular as drawn in more modern art, but he isn’t too small either. The sculpt is a good generic body type and style Captain Marvel. The packaging is different from a lot of DC Direct’s offerings, but has a classic feel that goes well with the figure. There is one odd thing about his body shape. The top of the ribs stick out beyond his pecks, which looks unnatural. For the most part though, the lightning bolt over this area distracts from the odd body shape.
The paint application is good, I don’t see any problems on mine except for the yellow trim on the cape. The cape has a shine to it, which is a nice effect on the figure. None of the joints are obvious except the “T” crotch, which is particularly noticeable against the dark red. In addition the wrists don’t look good when the fists are rotated, because the forearm will be bigger than the hand piece in some places. In addition, the fists are slightly angled to the arms, so it’s hard to make the hands look good if they’re not aligned with his arms.
Stylistically Captain Marvel will go with a lot of DC Direct figures based on height and style. I have a small DC Direct collection, and can say he goes well on display by himself, or with other figures of this series too. Overall, I’m very happy with how this figure turned out and looks on the shelf. There’s not a lot I would change on this figure.
Articulation
Marvel has a T crotch, cuts at the wrist and boot cuffs, and ball jointed shoulders with no bicep cuts. Articulation is pretty standard for DC Direct. The cape limits movement of his right arm some, and he can’t look up past level. Overall, I didn’t really expect more from DC Direct figure.
Poseablility
Captain Marvel goes well in a display with other DC Direct figures. He doesn’t have any dynamic poses he can really do, but is sturdy by himself or on his included stand. He’s too tall to look good with DCSH or DCU Classics, but should go well into an established collection, or by himself.
Final Judgment: 7
I’m not a big DC Direct fan, but I still like this figure a lot. Captain Marvel has a solid sculpt and paint job, and fits my own vision of what Captain Marvel looks like. This figure definitely deserves a chance with DC Direct collectors, and gets high marks.
