Ever lose control? Have you ever been so angry, that you wish you could just jump on someone’s back and rip their eyes out? In God of War, you can do just that. You can break enemies in half or get a Harpy (flying bat with boobs) out of the sky, step on it, and rip its wings off, plus many, many more things. This game is definitely among the best PS2 games I have ever played.

Faults of the game: 5 words
Not enough bosses and camera.

There were only 3 main boss battles in this game. They were all great and high scale, but there just weren’t enough of them. Sure, there were “mini-boss” fights, but still nothing beats impaling a huge Minotaur with a flaming piece of wood. By far, the best boss fight was the last one (which I will not reveal).

Now the second thing I didn’t like, the camera. In GoW, you cannot control the camera; it moves by itself. Even though it doesn’t get stuck anywhere, I would have still liked to zoom in on some things (Medusa’s Nipples).

The game had a number of small annoyances including the linear nature of the game and the character voices. The acting was great, but the voices didn’t seem to go with the characters. Krato’s voice didn’t seem right for the character; it lacked tone. Also, the gods’ voices didn’t seem powerful enough. I expected Ares’ voice to sound powerful and bellowing, but it sounded like he was just a normal human being. Enemy types also bugged me. I didn’t think there were enough of them. I would have at least liked to see some of them wearing different clothes. I know that some of them were different compared to area of the game, but I would have liked to see a bigger variety.

The PS2 is not suitable for this game. This game deserves better graphics. The graphics were great, but I would have liked to see them look even better, Xbox-Better. This title would have looked GREAT on the ‘Box.

Now with the good…everything else.

Let’s start with the combat. The combat mechanics are the best I have ever seen in a game. My only problem with it was actually caused by myself: sore fingers. The game requires you to keep tapping a button as fast as you can to do some things like shove a sword through an enemy’s throat, parry, or deflect things. That was the only problem I had with the combat. The best part of combat is definitely the animations. Krato’s blades and body move flawlessly through flesh and bone of enemies. There was never a point where it seemed choppy. The combos are great. My highest was 175, I believe. I’ve heard you can get it up into the 700’s. The magic is also a great addition to the combat. My favorite is definitely Poseidon’s Rage.

Onto Puzzles…
The puzzles in GoW are also great, very Zelda-esque. None were overly difficult, but a few made me want to punch something. A lot of them are “trial and error”. The ones that got to me the most were the race-against-the-clock ones, the walk-narrow-path-and-don’t-die ones, and of course the lovely jumping ones. The only reason the WNPADD and jumping puzzles caused problems was because of the camera. The camera either switched in mid-jump or was at an obscure angle.

The Story
The Story was definitely great. The very first cut scene made me upset, you will see why. The ending was unexpected, I didn’t even think it was a possibility. Most of the cut scenes are told in a flash back sort of way. It reveals why Kratos is who is he is. I don’t want to reveal anything, but you find out why he actually is as white as a marshmallow.

Maturity
This game is not for everyone. This game included blood, gore, dismemberment, violence, EXTEREME sexual nature (nudity, sex, sex mini-game, etc). The blood, sex, and gore go along with this game. It’s not just put in there for the hell of it. It actually all has a role. This game IS for mature people. I don’t recommend it to anyone with a weak stomach or discomfort with games with a sexual nature.

All in all, this is definitely one of the best games I have ever played. It took me away from Halo 2: no game has done that since its release. To sum it up, the only problems with this game I really have are the lack of boss battles and the camera. The great things: the enemies, the bosses *(even though there aren’t enough), LOTS of save points, great puzzles, and awesome combat. Another great thing is the unlockables. New modes, “secret messages”, a possible GoW2 storyline, and a chance to see things that didn’t make it into the game!

Scoring (1 – 10)

Graphics: 8 (in general)
9 (for a PS2 game)
Story: 9
Sound: 7
Playability: 9
Replayability: 7
Unlockables: 8
Pick-up-and-play: 10

Final note: This is by far, one of the best games I have ever played.
