It's
Wednesday and you know what that means:
ToyFarce review!
Hear ye, hear ye! This week, we're having a look at the
Kickstarter Medieval Spawn Remastered Trilogy Pack from
McFarlane Toys! It has arrived! After the success of the first
Kickstarter Spawn Remastered,
McFarlane Toys decided to continue remastering figures from the very first wave, and
what a glow up it is for
Medieval Spawn. The amount of details and accessories on that thing is insane!
Just like the previous
Kickstarter Spawn (
review can be found here), they came in big, beautiful boxes. Each box has a sleeve with a
Medieval Spawn helmet logo on the front, different color for each (
red for Classic Blue version, green for Black Edition and silver for the Prototype/Silver version). Each of those boxes open to reveal foam inserts with all the accessories on one side, and the figure in retro packaging on the other. Remember the faces
Todd McFarlane said we would do when opening the first Spawn?
Well, it's the same here!

First off, the
Classic Blue version. It is a remastered version of the 1995
Medieval Spawn figure, and comes with a
TON of accessories:
5 heads (normal helmet, unmasked, unmasked screaming, spartan helmet, valkyrie helmet with a movable part) along with a
soft helmet that can be put on either of the unmasked heads (
if you remember the Spawn Black Knight figure, it's kinda the same),
4 hands,
4 different forearm pads with magnets,
3 different chest plates with magnets,
2 different symbol chains for the cape, a
sword, a
large sword, a
round shield, a
large shield, a
small axe, a
large axe, a
scimitar, a
morning star, a
mace...
and a partriiiidge in a pear treeee! All of the details on the armor and sculpt are amazing. The articulations are better than the previous
Kickstarter Spawn, even though the cape could have been better.

The
Black Edition looks equally awesome, with all the blue parts switched to black for a more 'classic'
Spawn look (even if the classic
Medieval Spawn was always blue). I thought it wouldn't make much difference, but he does look great. With more contrast, your eyes tends to see more of the details on the silver or red armor parts, even though they are also there on the blue version. All 3 versions come with the
exact same list of accessories, which is nice, of course, but I thought there would be some accessories that would be only with one specific version (
just like the first Kickstarter, which had a mace or a grenade launcher only with one version).
Oh well, more for us then!

The
Prototype version (or
Silver edition) was going to be the unpainted, matte version like in the first
Kickstarter, but it was upgraded to silver during the campaign. I thought this would be the figure I'd be the least interested in in that trilogy pack, but I couldn't have been
more wrong. It looks incredible. The silver paint makes all the details shine and pop up even more. It makes him look like a more proper medieval knight too.

Overall, it's a great set. I'm very happy I got it. A few nitpicks (
of course): The
cape could have been better. People were begging for a soft goods cape and it would have definitely made that figure even more of a
masterpiece. The
magnets for the forearm pads, while being an awesome idea, tend to be a bit weak, and fall off easily when you manipulate the figure, so you'll end up picking them from your table/the floor often. The
sheath for the sword that goes over the cape hinders the articulations of the right arm a bit, but it can be removed (
the one on my Blue version was detached, but nothing that can't be fixed with a bit of super glue). And finally, the
shoulder pads, which are attached to the discs in the butterfly joints are a bit of a
pain in the butt. The details, the packaging, the armor, the presence of those figures on your shelf, etc... far outweighs the issues, though.
I remember
Todd McFarlane mentioning before the first
Kickstarter Spawn campaign even started that he'd love to do remastered versions of all the figures from that first wave of
Spawn figures from 1995, so I'm looking forward to see
Clown/
Violator,
Overt-kill and
Tremor join the 2
Spawns we got!
